How much can you save?

If I were you I'd ask Abbey why they turned you down as they shouldn't do a search for a savings account. Can tell you now if you're not already a Barclays customer you can't apply online. Bit annoying as this account was the one with the softest penalty for withdrawing money from them when I applied.0

Oh and I try to save just under half my salary a month and that's on top of paying for accomodation and everything else. Don't often manage it though as I enjoy the odd night out!0

I know your credit rating isnt effected by your savings, iv just been turned down twice(both times by abby) for a savings account so i just thought too many searches = bad rating = rejected. Well il go and have a look for a regular saver, it would have to be apply online. Anyone think saving half your salary is a bit much?
Why would Abbey turn you down for a savings account? What reason did they give?0 -
What is this new trend amongst the young to gamble. We have two people here - both under 25 - and they're both gambling extensively, if their records of winnings are any indication.
Surely the concept of gambling and saving are completely contradictory?0 -

I wouldn't call myself a 'gambler' but i don't mind the odd fiver on the old national lottery online games (V addictive, don't go near them!) and also got a fair amount of money in premium bonds (yes, i know, i have never won a penny either!) I think the odd gamble appeals to savers becuase there's the remote remote possibility you could hit your savings targets on one lucky day and avoid all the hard work!
You're absolutely right that if you're being purely rational and dedicated we should avoid gambling like the plague but humans don't work like that :rotfl: That's my excuse anyway:AMember of the 'How Much Can You Save' Forum.

I don't really mean buying a lottery ticket or something like that. I'm talking about the 18 year old rictus (who's signature reports his 'bookies' winnings for the month) and McSaver who reports a £600 gambling win as helping his savings this month.
It seemed odd to see two such posts in quick succession, both young people, and it made me wonder if this is normal.
I'm not judging - just asking - because I'd be interested to hear how their gambling 'habit' (and it must be a habit to generate £900 winnings in a month) squares with their commitment to save.
The two seem to be polar opposites to me.0 -
