But their's has better health and was fed better by their parents (and post war rations ) and so is going to have a healthier life....longer than their parents. In fact, our generation is meant to have a shorter lifespan isn't it, and our childrens worse still :( Now that is something we should ALL be ashamed of.

So why are we so worried about aging costs in the future? and what was that headline the other day about 20 million people alive today in the UK will receive a congratulatory message off the King/Queen. In fact could be a new govt debt sending them out:)

Message...because boomers will still be alive too? didn't see it! And I guess there are just MORE people.

Aging costs...because we all haven't provided enough I suppose, and because all of us will have longer lives than our pre war generations (generally: mine make it into their 100s regularly:D) and ther ar still more people...I think!

None of mine have ever made it into their 100s:(. Best was 91.

On a serious note, a lot of pension funds have had to adjust their mortality assumptions over the past few years, another reason for deficits. While I'm not 100% certain everyone believes that people will continue to live longer for a prolonged period of time, you have to plan for it or you risk leaving people with no income late in life and the government will come down on the trustees of your scheme for not being prudent.

I will however be amazed if a lot of the unfit couch potato children I meet live as long as fit older adults. In the library I see many more obese and unfit children than I did when I was a kid.

Not such good news for those who imagine the inheritance will pay for their pension...

I wouldn't take that bit of anecdotal as being true of the majority.

And those are the ones whose parents care enough to bring them to the library. I also wonder abut things like osteoporosis...not enough gently concussive exercise...the sort you get waking to school...to increase bone density.

Personally I think the science will exist to keep us alive longer than we would otherwise but I think this life will be expensive and not as rewarding as a fit and healthy retirement. Care costs will be a very large factor I guess.

which is why I used brackets and the word generally! Neither would I, but I was pointing out that ''general'' isn't what we as individuals might expect or hope for.

When I was at school there'd be just 1-2 fat kids in a school of 1000. Now there seem to be several in every class. Of course, one new thing is that they don't see themselves as fat. Their fat parents look at the fat kids and don't see they're fat because they're as fat as the other fat kids.

    They see fat as normal.

In the 70s I went to school with quite a few malnourished kids.

We even clubbed together to get one lad some new y fronts, as he only had 1 pair. He also had to be 'trained' in using a urinal, as he didnt know what it was.

That's exceptionally sad. I wonder what would happen now in the same circumstances.

I suppose, trying to be positive, the boy must have felt some great friendship from his peers and that his friends learned compassion?
