Lula you're right about the carrots - they don't like stones (can make roots fork)

But without stones, you miss all the comedy!

True, but it would be depriving you of your 'job', & what would you do then to entertain us ?

No, on second thoughts, dont answer that.

S*d it, I'm leaving the stones in - they're big 'uns and Lord knows I need a laugh!

Thanks lovely green-fingered ladies. TBH my friend *did* say free-draining, rather than dry. He just said he thought they were difficult to grow, but I'm not deterred!
I need to clear the plot first and do a soil test (do I really need to do that?), then DH is going to build up the sides to make a raised bed, so I can improve the soil.

We only moved here in September and discovered 2 lovely apple trees - one of which looks (and tasted :p) like a bramley. A good few crumbles were made - I'm still trying to lose the old junk from the trunk after feeding my face every weekend.....

Thanks again for all the good advice - I'm buzzing! :D

I wouldn't do anything. I'd be doing things I'd find entertaining. You'd just have to entertain yourself with your root vegetables.
I am sure he has a collection of those, just ready to whip out when the occasion demands it.

So which one of you ladies is demanding a phallic carrot?

All they can do is bend your carrot. It'll still go down as well as an unbent one.

Good to see excitement over root vegetables...

  • No need for a soil test mac girl - happy you've figured it's good to grow carrots easy peasy. Any shape or size :)

If you want a pH test I can do you one here got all the kit - but tbh for every veg plot I've tested they are all pretty similar :)

Happy to help if you like...:)

Isn't the gardening talk great! My bulb walk might have to wait, actually, as its raining *again* - we're back to Atlantic system weather, hey ho.

Nice to see that > :) from you.

Every year I mean to plant bulbs in the 'lawn' ( I use that word loosely to define the green area) so come the spring all these lovely bulbs will be dotted about, but each autumn I forget.

*wonders if I could do some now ?*
I bet you could - thanks for the comment on the :) yes, I'm back again - my voice isn't, but I've just had 2 flu-cancellation for the next few days, so that will help me stop straining my throat.

I think this is the week I start trading. That "think" isn't hestitation, its classic British understatement on lifechanging decisions :D:D:D those cancellations are there to stop me straining my voice, yes, but also to free up my time and energy for the trading :D:D:D.

    So I have decreed
I had a thought (probably not final) if you grow non-organic seed - it's kinda like getting battery chickens which you've set free. It makes no difference really and by growing organically - you will set them free to be happy
Oh my god, what a brilliant concept! I love that :T:T:T

Kc glad you had some space :)
Thanks Pippi - it feels good :)

Lula you're right about the carrots - they don't like stones (can make roots fork) but do like free drainage, which is why a lot of folk add sand, to make drainage ok when stone free - so perfect for that size of a raised bed :)

I can't keep myself right never mind anything else!! Xx

Isn't that pic of Z's amazing :rotfl:I'm with Bob, I think he has a stash, but where does he get the stash from? I think we should be told :p

Got to do some free listing ebay today - odd things, that childhood sewing machine that I hate, plastic garden chairs, a single door curtain, that sort of weird mix of stuff. And I really want to go to Sainsbury - might go first thing, I *think* there's fewer people there then, I'm not really sure.

Otherwise, its getting the house (and me) straight so I can have a nice calm evening. This includes a lot of to-ing and fro-ing on the web about hotel and train bookings for the posh wedding in April, hey ho, so I'll be back here ranting and asking advice :D
