    Thanks, everyone for your help on this. I think as it looks like the company I work for is in a bad way and the job I do is undervalued by the management (and not just in monetary terms) I'll likely be among the first out the door when the time comes. So I'm going to leave this idea alone for a while, have another glass of wine, perhaps have a look for a new job, maybe book a (cheap)holiday as something to look forward to.

    As an aside, conversations at work today lead me to believe that no one in the company can afford to live within their means on that job alone. Most everyone has a sideline - one lady sometimes works until 2am, then gets up and is back at her desk for 8am. I admire her, but I don't want that for myself. It was also commented that my booking a holiday 5 months away might be 'optimistic'. I fear this is not the time to make any financial commitments.

    I'll come back to it when the future looks less grim.

    Yes, I would definitely say you are being paid very little compared to your education.

    Our son graduated in 1993, M.Sc. !st class in software engineering, his first job with BT paid £14k.

    Our daughter has a similar/better degree (graduating soon) and should start on £28k
