Oil companies got us over a barrel?

I've just a delivery of oil which I ordered about 3 weeks ago. All well and good, except that when I ordered it they told me they wouldn't be able to deliver it until the end of January. I didn't think we could last that long on what was left so we rang another company who said they could deliver first week in Jan but would need payment upfront (new customer rule). I rang the original company back to cancel the initial order and they said that while they were happy for me to do that I might want to think twice because they'd had several other customers cancel orders, only to reinstate them because the other companies weren't delivering when they said they would. As my Mum was using the second company and had already had her delivery date put off five times I decided to leave the original order in place.
Now I ought to be happy that I've got the oil early and I don't have to worry about running out; which I am. However, the second company we rang said that some companies were giving long delivery times because they knew the price of oil was going up and they wanted to make sure customers paid the higher price. I know all these companies do each other down, but having just received an order a month early, when prices have coincidentally just shot up, am I wrong to feel cynical?!

Thank you for that, Suki. Perhaps I was being unjust for once! Actually, I found out later on yesterday that I paid a penny per litre less than my mum whose oil was delivered a week ago.I'll stop looking this particular gift horse in the mouth!0

My oil delivery was 2 weeks late and price had risen by nearly 10p per litre (bit stiff for 950 litres) so you are lucky0
