what has happened to the rest of my no claims then??

  • I'm sure somebody will correct me if I'm wrong but once you get to 5 years that is deemed to be 'full' ncb. So in the case of an accident you'd lose two years, which will take you down to 3.

The system is designed with the insurers interests in mind not the motorists.

The full no claims discount is after five years, some insurances give allowance if you haven't claimed for longer.

Double the previous premium seems a bit extreme, premiums have gone up yes, then its the loss of a percentage of the NCD, then the loading for the claim. Have you ask for a breakdown of the premium?
  • I've got 23 years NCD but the insurers only recognise 5 (or 6) years max, it's all designed to make sure they make a good profit out of careful drivers.

When I was involved in an accident back in 1991, my insurance company claimed off the other driver's insurance as it was his fault, so I kept my NCD, isn't this the case here OP?

    More info would help.

Not all do. My insurer (LV) takes into account NCD up to 9 years, as do a few others.

OP, if you had that amount of no claims, why didn't you get it protected?

If the issue is in dispute, then the NCD will be removed (or the relevant portion of it). Once it has been sorted out, and if found in your favour, you will have it replaced. In future it may pay you to pay a little extra to protect your no claims bonus - we do that every year, 'just in case'.

If you read up on NCD in your policy you will see the way they treat any claim.

When you make a claim, no NCD is awarded for the year in which the claim is made, and you "lose" 2 years from any you had at the start of the insurance year. As already advised, they take 5 as the max when sliding down.

If the matter is resolved 100% in your favour, and your insurer gets full reimbursement from the third party, then your full NCD will get reinstated and you will get the extra pemium you have paid refunded.

Keep a note of what your premium would have been had you not made the claim so that you can make sure you are properly reimbursed if the matter does end up as a 100% non fault claim.
