Bought one, accidentally got one free

I purchased a TV from a large electronics retailer a few weeks only to get it home and set up and found it to be faulty (numerous green pixels). I took the TV back into the branch closest to my home yesterday and was told that because it was not purchased from that exact store I would have to return it to the original store of purchase on the opposite side of town. I trundle down there today, can only get parked a fair distance from the store and proceed to carry the TV all the way from my car to the store (pulling a muscle in my arm in the process). They exchanged it for me and asked me where my car was parked. I told them and they said I would be better returning to my car and driving round to their pickup point where one of their warehouse operatives would load it into my car for me. So I do as they say, get to the pickup point, hand my receipt over to the warehouse guy, he tells me to wait a few minutes whilst they get the stock and load my car. They do that, hand my receipt back to me, wish me well and I drive home. I get home to discover they've put two identical TV's in my car!

I set one up only to find it has the same problem as the original TV, but only a couple of tiny green pixels on this one (to be honest, still perfectly viewable, just not perfect). So I proceed to set the second one up and all is fine (Woo hoo, finally a fully working TV!)

My predicament is this, what do I now do with the slightly faulty TV? I'm thinking I should write them a letter for them to come and collect it at their expense and at a time convenient to me considering the hassle I have already had. Is this acceptable? What are the legalities of this?

Any help would be appreciated.

I'm not sure where you stand legally but I wouldn't worry. Personally I'd call them up, let them know whats happened and say the man loaded up two TVs into your car without you knowing, that your injured (pulled muscle) and if they want it back they will need to come collect it.

I'd offer to take it off your hands but by the sounds of it its not going to fit on the bus....
  • I would be tempted to take it back and ask for a full refund on the basis that you have had two faulty tellys now. You would then have a new telly and not spent a penny!

    Disgraceful.

Do the right thing, phone them up and inform them that they have given you 2 wrong ones and ask them to come and collect the other faulty one.

Just give them a ring and ask them to come and pick it up, if they don,t, get rid of the faulty one.

well surely your obliged to inform them what happened, if you didnt inform them and they cam knocking you might be in a bit of bother for not informing them

personally id inform them what happened and to pick up said tv at a time to suit you eg anytime after 4pm or in the morning, plus having a dead tv or not quite good working tv in the house will take up space

Seriously! There are some folk on here who make me laugh! Holier than thou or what??

OP, why are you even asking the question? You know that the 'right' thing to do is to contact the store and tel them to collect the TV. However, if it was me i'd be whoop whooping all the way to ebay with the gratuit TVski! As far as i'm concerned these big conglomerates rip folk off all the time anyway-they are not going to be crying into their pillows at night over this! Also, how on earth are they going to trace this? The answer is, they won't. they are so busy a this time of year, they can't keep up with stock.

It is down to conscience. They gave you the TV accidentally, you didn't steal it. I think you simply want people here to tell you to keep the telly! Do what you want to do, you decide!!

Just bear in mind that whoever is responsible for the TV stock control at the shop may get fired if it is not returned.

Agree with Karma, I found money and handed it in and later that day I lost my purse but got it back.
  • The critical question is "At what point did you honestly notice that you had 2 TV's in your car" ?

If the honest answer were to be "just before I drove away" then I'm afraid technically you're guilty of theft. The definition of "Theft" under the 1968 Theft Act is if you dishonestly appropriate property belonging to another with the intention of permanently depriving them of it.

Now, I'm not saying this is the case here - but be careful
