I had a car at 17 too. A 1986 Mazda 323 1.3. insurance just under 900 quid but the car itself was only 'worth' about £2.80. Car insurance has always been expensive when you just pass test.

    No it hasn't.
    I had a Marina Van
Two Hillman Hunters (1725cc twin carb)
Talbot Alpine (1600 weber carb version)
    1600cc supercharged beach buggy.
All before the age of 21, and all affordable.
But to be fair, a 1986 Mazda would had been out of "Back to the Future". The flying version, with the Mr Fusion reactor.

Showing my age here - first car insurance was £37.50 per year TPF&T for a morris 1100! DD's cost £650 last year FC on a 1 litre corsa - we live in a low risk area offshore and have all of our vehicles with one insurer which was recognised in the quote. Usual terms for 17 year olds are c£1k.
  • I am feeling the pain on this subject too:

My stepson is learning to drive at the minute and has his test end of the month. He is a student and working part time he's 18 at the end of the month.

I have tried all different cars as we really don't knwo which one to buy due to the price of insurance. We don't want to spend anymore than £1000 though. I've tried quotes for Fiesta/KA/206/punto and the cheapest I have got is £3,078.92 by Compare.

The most exspensive is £9505.99 by aviva we've spent £100's on driving lessons for him and sadly it's looking like he won't be able to afford it in any case.

My first policy 10 years ago was about £1000 on a fiat siecento or whatever it was called 10 years on and 10 years no claims it's at £300. I do have 6 points though. :o

So, why does he need a car?

Is it actually cost effective for him to have a car or would it an expensive white elephant? I mean, after buying the car and paying for running it, filling it up and insurance etc, is it really worth a student with a part time job having a car?

Aviva rarely say no to providing a price. Even on business they dont want. They just price at stupidly high figure to act as passive block. They are not alone in doing this.

  • He would benefit from a car yes, As his mum thought it would be a good idea to move to another city from which he is at college and getting there for him is such a pain he's leaving at 6:30am to get there. He doesn't want to change college as he's in his 2nd year of his graphics & design course. He is finding it impossible some days to get home to get to work ontime too, & frequently finding himself being called into the office, He got a really good time time job as a junior with a graphics & design company which is quite hard to come across with no qualifications in the subject but my friend got him the job on a college leave sort of basis. It would be a great step and career for him if he stays there, But needs to stay in college to get the qualifications as its part of the deal so to speak. So in terms of that yes. It's looking likely that he will be going to work just to pay for the car and have no spare money but if he wants a job at the end of it thwn I guess theres not much choice for him.

As he needs transport, rather than a car, what about a moped or motor bike, which would be considerably cheaper to run and insure. Total madness to spend all of his income on a car.

    Hi,

I'm at the end of my tether with insurance.

I'm 19, male and a Full Time Student at Durham University and I've had my driving license for 2 years, but I simply cannot afford to insure myself on a car.

In May my parents were kind enough to purchase a 99' Toyota Starlet for me, however since that date I have yet to achieve a quote under £1800 and quite frankly I believe that's a ridiculous amount to pay.

I had contemplated taking the Pass Plus, but at £150 and potential savings surmounting on average to only £100 so it's really not economical.

How are young drivers like myself supposed to gain driving experience?

I'm not a bad driver, infact I passed with 0 Minors, and I really don't care for speed. Yet why am I effectively classed as a boy racer?

It's lead me to consider how most of the young drivers I see and know to be driving around are actually insured? Are they all insurance fronting through their parents (which in my experience is more expensive when using many comparison sites), or are they simply not insured?

Anyway, rant over. If anybody has any suggestions on how to bring my insurance premiums would be gladly appreciated.

try A Plan just got my son a very good deal £1376.00 FULLY COMP WITH LEGAL COVER INCLUDED IS THEIR 15 QUID FEE! student still at school aged 18 tips you the main driver parents as named drivers if they have a good record allow a credit check and keep miles low for use of the car AND ANY NO CLAIMS YOU HAVE will reduce the cost....type of car needs to be about 1.2 i.e fiesta or corsa not too old 2000 upwards and where you keep the car overnight has to be secure i.e driveway etc good luck
  • try A PLAN got a good deal for my son 1.2 fiesta 2002 fully comp £1376.00 policy aviva. i could not get this direct though as i tried.d deal...tesco banking were not too bad but this is a much cheaper deal
my son is age 18 student still at school one years no claims/ mum and dad as named drivers on the policy agreed a credit check and agreed low milage use 6000 miles in a year cover includes their fee of 15 quid and legal cover of 26 quid
  • thats what my stepson just did - he paid around a grand for a really nice yamaha YBR 125 motorbike and totally loves it cost him under a tenner a week to run and insurance is 270 for the year
he passed his driving test and pass plus but in the space of learning to drive and passing his test the insurance went from 1100 to over 2220 with young marmalade if its just transport that he needs then a motorbike makes so much more sense
I would reccomend getting a 125 though and doing the cbt test for bikes rather than a 50cc moped
