My son is having the same problems - £1800 for a "N" reg 1.2 Renault Clio!!!

Your emphasis i expect is because the premium is more than the value of the car. However, remember that the cost the insurer is looking at is the injuries and deaths and third party claims that will follow from others that have their property damaged of injured/killed. Your son's car is largely irrelevant in the costing. If he hits a £50,000 car and injuries the occupants then the million pounds or so paid out dwarfs the £500 odd that the car cost.

To be honest, £1800 for a young driver is not bad.

  • Thanks for the help and advice.

I've decided for the immediate future it's not worth me being insured on the car.

We've also decided that, whilst the car itself is in great condition and reliable, both my parents and I should start thinking ahead. The goal being that when my premiums have reduced to what we consider/I consider to be a reasonable amount we'll have saved enough money to perhaps purchase a better car.

My daughters first year insurance came in at £800 which fell to £700 for the second year until we gave the Liverpool post code of her university which increased the cost to £1200.
I paid up but not happy.
  • It sucks, but its no news flash..

Every year i read about how premiums are going through the roof "this year", yet its only now after 13 years of driving that my premium has risin YoY..

My first insurance 13 years ago was £1250 on a new 1.4 Astra which would probably be £1800-£2000 now.

Insurance for new drivers has ALWAYS been expensive unfortunately.

Problem is that even working young people can't afford insurance particularly if they live in a city and work out of it.

Yes I do know how people got round it in the past - cycling, walking and catching lifts if no public transport was available.

Did help that not everyone expected to have a car particularly if their parents didn't get one until they could remember.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)
  • You've made the right choice I think, it's nice to have a car while you're a student (I had one during my placement year for commuting and loved it!) but not necessary at all. I was playing with quotes the other day for if I need a car for work once I graduate and was pleased to see prices will come down to about £500 once I'm 23 - female though. Just think how much better off you'll be, imagine if you had a bump this year which sent your premiums even higher in the future, think of the positives :)

    I had a car when I was 17.
    I could afford it.
Most of my mates had cars at uni as well.
