Moving mobile number from Orange and back again

Hi

I already had a pay monthly contract with Orange and have just taken out a second one (with plenty of cashback etc).

I now want to end my first contract and get that number moved to the second SIM card.

I have just spoken to Orange about how to do this. I mentioned I had previously done the same thing by getting a PAC code from Orange, taking this to a new 'temporary' network (Asda in that case) on PAYG, then doing the same in reverse to move the number back to Orange.

Orange advised that there are some networks where I would potentially be stuck on that, 'temporary', network for up the 3 months. Is that correct? What networks would do this? Couldn't I just request a PAC code from them at any time?

Does this make sense?

Thanks

I've never heard of the wait 3 months one, but I have heard of some requireing you to have had at least £10 paid top up on the account before you request a PAC, perhaps some networks it is a case of either/or, if you dont want to top up £10 you have to wait 3 months.

I would think if you read the T&Cs of the network you would be looking to temporarily move the number to then thoes terms would be in there somewhere.

Orange are talking rubbish max time without your number a week. 2 days to port out 2 days to port in, couple of days lead way sorted. Would advise against T Mob as they try to get you to top up !

    Can you explain the process?
I have a month to go on an orange contract and i have a golden number.
How do I get a new contract (with a decent deal rather than an upgrade) and get to keep my number, I understand that I have to move it out to another company and back again - how do I do this?
    Thanks
  • As others have said, just ask for your PAC code from Orange port to another network and then request for another PAC code and give this back to Orange... Job done!

As long as it's a Pay as you Go account they can't deny you a PAC code.

    Thanks for the response.
How long would this process take?

Which PAYG network would you recommend for a hassle free turnaround?

  • If I remember it's any but Orange - Orange for some reason seem to send the PAC Codes out by Post and can take a few days to arrive!

I know O2 gave my PAC Code by Text & Over the phone the last time...

  • I'm thinking about doing this, I don't have a PAYG sim (of a different network) handy to port my number to.

if I get a new sim (different network) do I have to put money on it to register?

or can I port the my number to the sim by calling CS once i've received it?
  • 'Most' SIMs will have some credit on these so you can activate them, then all you have to do is contact Customer Services and then arrange the Number Transfer with the PAC Code.
