Why does my phone not know my correct location?

HTC Desire.
I have set and reset the Location button. GPS is on.
My phone insists that my location is approx 80 miles north of where I actually live. I use apps Latitude, Maps, My Tracks and the Weather one, and on all of them it thinks i'm in north Lancashire.

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Are you outside with a clear line of sight to the sky?

Sounds like broken GPS or settings .
A factory reset if you have one on the phone may sort the problem but it may delete all your data .

My ZTE blade also thinks i'm in lacashire, or is it Yorkshire. I think that is the default setting in Android 2.2 until your GPS actually picks up a signal.

    Thanks everyone.
I didn't mention in my first post that I've had the phone for a month so it's had plenty of time to work out where I am!
Yes I've been trying to get it to work outside, clear line of sight up to the sky.
Well I think it's safe to say that it's wonky, will speak to Vodafone and see what they say.

Download a free app called "GPS Test" from Android Market.
open it up and see what satellites it can find.

if you find 3 or less then thats the problem for the terrible fix, (ideally you need 4 good signal for a good GPS fix)

Must say I'm surprised at this. I've got a SF running a custom 2.1 rom, and it picks up my location perfectly with the GPS off!

    It's working, thank you! :j
I downloaded GPS test, went outside, and it found 11 in view, 7 in use.
I then clicked onto My Tracks - it updated to my correct location. Latitudes and Maps both work too. Not checked Weather yet.

Well I dont understand this, it's as if the GPS Test app gave it a nudge or something, but anyway it's working, I can use My Tracks and I'm happy!

    Thanks again.
