phone better for maps and gps?

Was thinking of buying a garmin hand held gps as I'm forever getting lost out walking (rural). Was wondering if I could get a phone with the same facility that would also act as a car GPS, while having the facility of accessing other aps & internet, not to mention make a phone call. Any recommendations pls or would I get more map info from the hand held garmin, mostly footpath/field walking? Thanks

A phone is not a dedicated GPS mapping unit but saying that lots use mobile phones for such tasks .
The two negatives will be battery life and GPS power as by its nature the mobile has other tasks besides GPS .
My Samsung Galaxy s does all i want in that line using Viewranger and Map My tracks plus built in voice navigation and aerial shots .

have a look at nokia phones with their built in ovi maps, newer ones come with free car and pedestrian navigation, and you can add specific waymarkers which are very good for walking/geocaching. lat/long work but grid refs don't or you can select them off a map.

the maps are fully offline so you need no network signal to be able to use the maps (GPS doesnt need any signal either), and like other phones if you take a photo with the phones camera it will geotag the photo.

if you keep a charger in the car for the phone then you can keep it topped up while it navigates you to the site then use it for walking and then charge it on the way back.

I dont think any phone will be as good as a dedicated walking GPS unit but for the walking/car sat nav crossover I would say ovi maps is top at the moment.
