Hello, I am so upset. I went over today to Santander at 13:02 saw two people being served and one waiting. I just wanted to lodge £50 in my account so I went to the ATM in branch to deposit cash. £20 it accepted straight away but the other thirty was rejected so I had to make several attempts (using other notes I had in my bag) to lodge it. It finally swallowed all £50 then told me "sorry" it wasn't working. I put my card in again a few minutes later when the normal screen returned to check my balance and none of the money had registered. By this stage a queue had built up but I went to the top and said what happened (two extra staff members behind tills) I was told to join queue.
Whilst queuing I warned others not to lodge.

Finally at the top - no apology...after another 10 minutes the manager came back to me and said she only found £20 in the ATM. Then a minute later said it was a £10 (she had made a mistake). She then said she could not confirm what had being put in until after they had reconciled it later - then told me that may not be possible today.

I did say I wanted the video footage kept and if they came back and said that I put in less than £50 I would call the police. I also had a witness who saw the whole thing and she kindly gave me her name and number.

Frankly, I saw the manager saying this has been happening with this machine so I said "so why do you let people use it?" It took me over 30 minutes waiting for them and I had frozen food from Sainsburys which turned to mush.

I am so annoyed. They should have responded immediately when this happened - not kept me waiting for an extra 20minutes. They should also warn people that the machine may eat your money and it may not be found (if ever) until they bother to reconcile it...which may be the next day.
Also as soon as it's reported they should stop anyone else from using it. It did not go out of service till 25 minutes after I entered.

Then the manager said I could phone them tomorrow to see what they find...I said "no, you can call me"....HUH! If they had been apologetic it would have helped.....rubbish service in LONDONDERRY DIAMOND branch.

(daughters birthday tomorrow, magnum bars for them have just gone to the bin ...what about chicken dippers - they are totally defrosted - should I bin them too?)

  • The only way this bank will sort itself out is if/when thousands in a very short space of time suddenly move to another bank and close their accounts with this one.

Until then they wont bother, why should they, they have plenty of customers...........
Wow, I got 3 *, when did that happen :j:T:p

I find your story interesting, but for the fact that you don't "lodge" (or even DEPOSIT) individual notes in such machines, but put them ALL TOGETHER into a deposit envelope along with your deposit/paying-in slip and put it in the slot when directed to.

Your story stinks to high heaven and therefore I call you a bull-sh!tter!

I was just thinking this.. It spits out a deposit envelope and then you fill it, enter in how much your depositing then it takes it.

    odd

OP - you weren't possibly shoving in notes when you should have been putting them in an envelope? Not sure which pre-Santander bank you are with, but I'm with what was the Abbey and you had to use a deposit envelope to put notes/cheques in.

The customer service you received sounds awful (Santander are terrible), but on the point about reconciling - they don't really have any option on that. Tallying up takes place at the end of the day.

Halifax have machines that you do put cash directly into and it counts it there and then and deposits it into your account straight away. Maybe some Santander branches have something similar.

So do Nationwide. And as OP stated some were rejected, it would make sense.

The machines will reject notes that are slightly creased or even inserted the wrong way.

If it were me, I would phone the next day to see what they found. Wouldn't rely on them to phone me.

You don't know what your talking about, so why insult people when it just shows you up for a fool.

A number of banks now have machines where you insert notes and cheques together, and it automatically counts them.
