play.com fraud on my abbey account

:mad::(:(:(:(

Morning all, ive checked my online banking same as everyday and i noticed £168 out to play.com. Ive gone onto my play account and 3 games have been ordered and sent to "sisters" address in salford. Ive contacted abbey/santander who were fab (i know they get slated alot on here) and they have put a dispute on the payment. Ive been told the money should be refunded in 10 working days.
But will that really happen? I have the address the goods were sent to etc but they said they didnt need it.

Im soooo upset i know its not alot compared to what happens to some people (my own parents have had thousands taken 2 or 3 times over the yrs)

Play.com were so unhelpful the man couldnt understand me and vice versa and in the end i had to hang up and email them.

Guess ill be using my credit card to get the food shopping this week then

  • Have you changed your play.com password to stop it happening again? If you use the same password for other websites make sure they are also changed.

    Is "sister" known to you?
This is an open forum, anyone can post and I just did !
  • I have changed passwords thankyou, ive also change the email address on the play.com account. Not sure this will make any difference? but i doubt ill ever use them now anyway?
With regards to the police, i asked santander and they said they would deal with it all now?
If i contact the police which way would i do it? ie is there a online form etc.

Just out of intrest how does this whole fraud work so to speak ie i have the address they sent the goods to, do they tend to live at these addresses?

Also ive just realised that my cards have been blocked and new ones sent out. Is there any way i can get some cash? i can live on my credit card for now but lunch money etc i need cash although could borrow off family?
  • no "sister" isnt thats just what they have put the delivery name as "sister then my name" never heard off the address and without looking on a map wouldnt even have a clue where it is
    Its a salford address
  • I have now reported it to the police and have a crime refrence number. Thankyou for all your help

unfortunately my understanding of things is that'll be unlikely, they've probably identified it as an address with lax security around incomming mail -eg block of flats where it is all left in the communal lobby / some insider working as a concierge or an empty house where johnny criminal can park up and wash his car on the driveway the morning its expected and 'intercept' it pretending to be the homeowner.
  • The bank will do a chargeback to recover the money from Play.com.

The onus will then ne on Play.com to recover their money/chase the criminals.

They will only chase the criminals if they can't do the chargeback as they will then be at a loss financially.

I do suggest that you consider how they have managed to access your account and password.

Have you fully virus scanned the PC?

If you use similar passwords on other accounts, you want to consider changing them. But use a different PC to do so until you are sure there are no nasties hiding on your system.
  • Firstly thankyou for the further replys.

Opinions4u- How they got in is something that im wondering about too. A few things i do know is
a.) i didnt get any order confirmation/change of password/password reminder emails like others have on the play.com fraud thread ive read on here today.

b.) I have 2x laptops and a desktop computer and all have norton and all had full checks run on xmas eve. Any other free protection you can think of?

c.) only other website that had same password was facebook but ive changed ALL my passwords today, rerouted emails to my other email address and also deleted all credit cards and my santander from sites i know save them ie amazon.

The one thing thats got me thinking is my laptop is away being fixed with currys, its under warrenty. I dont think it could have anything to do with that but my mind is just ticking over as ive never had any breachs on any of my cards and i buy online all the time.

Play.com,santander and the police are all aware now and ive been told its being dealt with. Im just hoping and praying the money gets payed back asap and as smoothly as possible.
