haha my brain just homed in on windows 98 with the thoughts of omfg and didnt even think about overclocking the system,
although thinking about it now i might have the break out my 'spare' system and see how much i can get out of that old beauty (sempron 3000+ which i think is stock clock at 1.8ghz with 1gb of DDR400 ram) hhmmm wonder if i can break 2.5ghz, a quick google shows people getting them to 2.4,
hm starting to get the itch, must resist as the Mrs might actually kill me in my sleep if i spend the entire bank holiday weekend overclocking a old system that isnt likely to be used, short of the total destruction of my main system
gonzo, if you do manage it, let me know how-to please - my main desktop is still a semperon 3000+ and whilst it's trimmed (blackviper is a hero)and still pretty quick, I had thought of looking into overclocking, but not done it before. Let me know how you get on...pleeeze

am i the only person who is thinking 'my god how is someone is still using windows 98'?
I use it very successfully, my computer is up and running in about 20 seconds and everything is lightning fast. The 'puter does everything I need it to do, so I've never felt the need to upgrade to a more cumbersome OS. The only minor problems I have are Youtube being geared for versions of firefox that I can't have. The only thing on Youtube which I can't use properly is the comments, to post a comment I have to click on the "old version" link first. Not that I even use youtube very much.
Other problems I have are ITV player getting stuck on the advert breaks, or not playing at all. I don't know if this is browser related or RAM related. Oh and firefox has started to crash a lot, it can't cope with google satelite ans streetview anymore, but it used to be fine with them, I wonder if Google recently changed the flash version or something. Apart from as I say minor niggles I get on fine with Win98SE
I have a second 'puter here with Win XP, other than that it has a similar setup to mine except it has a sempron 1.67GHz and 512MB RAM (I have an Athlon XP 2GHz and 256MB RAM). The XP running computer takes ages and ages to boot up, to perform the simplest of tasks like opening a word document. I haven't tried the internet with it yet. When you use it, the hard drive never seems to stop chattering.
My dad's Athlon XP 3GHz running win XP also takes ages to boot up and is very slow surfing the internet.
I could happily continue with Win98 but SWMBO wants to link with the works computer so she can work from home with two monitors!!! and to do that I need WIN XP or later, and some new 1GB bars of RAM.0 -
hey Gunjack, well i will if i do decide to pee the Mrs off with it, however if its your main computer i wouldnt recommend a major overclock as to do a proper one you need to mess with the voltages to make it stable ie push the bus speed and multipliers as far as they go and whne it gets unstable you up the voltage to make it stable again,
anyway with such a old system this runs a very high risk of frying it due to numerous reasons such as old dried up thermal paste, potentially cloged fans and heat sinks, old warn PSU giving a less than stable power output and just the fact that the CPU could be coming to its normal operational lifespan anyway, so with it being your main system i would advise against it, you could however do a minor overclock which just requires playing with the bus speed and multipliers untill it becomes unstable than pulling back to the best stable clock without having to pump any extra voltage throught it, this will keep the temp down and minimise the possibility of a fried system, with this i would estimate you should be able to get around a 5-10% overclock with relitive ease which is better than nothing
Wig - sorry if my comment seemed to be having a go, its just i am somewhat security consious so running a OS which has not been supported for ~4 years seems odd to me as it will have a lot of security holes in it and most new programs will not run on it, but i can understand staying with it if it works, i just would be worried about using it for anything important due to the security holes it will have
i personally run a old laptop which has a celeron 1.2ghz cpu and 512 ram so i know your issues with running a bloated OS on such a low powered system, i however have chosen to run Lubuntu (Linux) on it which runs likes a dream, boots up and online very quickly, but because it is a new OS i can run new software on it (comes with google chrome browser but i also have firefox 3.6 on it) ok i cant run some of the microsoft software on it but i just use it for the basics and so have not come across any software needs which it doesnt have an alternative to
anyways just a thought, have you throught about changing the 512mb RAM in the sempron system over to the athlon system and put the 256 into the sempron system, just seems a waste having a better CPU with less ram than the system with a worst CPU
you might also find if you connect the XP system to the net and download all the updates for it it would run a lot faster as they might have put out the patches for XP to fix the slowness problems you are having - also check out some of the other threads Closed has created a great how to for speeding up a system which could help in this instance https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2436849Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)0 -
well, firstly you can get various different data types and speeds of buses connected to processors in accordance to the peripherals connected. On the newer processors, the cpu interface via the nothbridge and southbridge chips (chipset), plus the memory is accessed straight from the cpu - not to long ago was also done by the above chipset on intel, but amd showed the the way.
Now the cpu is clocked by multiple frequency generators. The main one is the clock speed. These frequencies often start a a sinusodial wave that gets converted into a square wave. Depending on the circuitry, this wave can be the original frequency, or double the original frequency. On top of this the cpu only clocks when a 0 goes to a 1, but on some cpu's it clocks on a state when a 1 goes to a 0. Amd came along and used both 0 to 1 changes and 1 to 0 changes, making their cpu effectively twice as fast as the competition, plus getting two square waves out of one cycle can give a 4x clock speed compared to the original frequency.
a multiplier of 12 makes 12 clock cycles happen before the data may be released on the bus.
the answer to the correct type of memory is to visit Crutial (kingston may do it too) and see what the best spec your boards and components support.

A lot of issues you are having can be mitigated with decent codec's and a good pruning of the MSCONFIG startup items. I'm not sure if the 6.7 of K-Lite will run on '98 you may need to find an earlier version closer to v3.5, then if it installs ok update from v3.5
I've just REM '98 suffered / suffers from a huge memory leak, I used to edit the win.ini file but after all this time I cant remember how !Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion.
