42" Television - where to start?

We have been looking at 42 inch LCD (though TV problem now fixed so no need!!) and we had decided on the 42 inch LG that is currently on offer for £379 all over the place. We looked at the picture in Tesco and compared it to a few others and it is nice and sharp with no blur. LG has a good name for TVs too. A few places are offering a 5 year guarantee on it too, not sure if that is LG or the shops. What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0

The Hz figures are a bit of a nonsense - 600!! for plasmas and 100/200 elsewhere , uk tv only transmits 50Hz. The high Hz sets "make-up" frames and don't always get it right.0

Yes, that's the only problem with that one, you do need to live near to it.Thanks. The PRC one looks great with the 5 year guarantee but it's out of stock and you have to order it from the shop. I'm up north and they are down south!
I have not heard of the other two and I am a little dubious about ordering from them.
Quite a few of the big boys had it for under £600 a couple of weeks ago but they all put the price up at the same time:(:(
The other two might need some investigation to see if anyone has had any problems with them.
A quick check and DigitalHDMI has some very poor reviews so is probably best avoided.
The other one there is little I can find and no reviews except for this

A google maps visit might be worth doing.
So use at your own risk! A credit card gives some protection but not against bad service. The Prcdirect site has been around for quite a while as I remember visiting the site quite a long time back.0 -
Spent a few hours in various showrooms looking at a variety of tv sets. Feel it was a bit of a pointless exercise at times because of the split feed that goes into the majority of tv's - always felt that the picture I was looking at wasn't a true reflection of what the screen could produce.
Also an annoying salesman, who insisted that one unit was a 'bargain!'. But when I questioned him as to why it was technically superior to other sets, 'it's an updated version of that, really good'. Kind of lost me at that point - since found out that it's a 2008 model as well.
The conclusion I've come to is that I'm well and truly lost. Formed a list of tv's, price checked, searched reviews. I've been hours reading various articles. Also input lag when gaming - is this common amongst all HD sets?
Back to square one where it all started and looking at the LG 42LD490 for £450. Does this represent good value for money? Will it cope with sport and gaming?0 -

You can never compare tvs in a shop so well done for that.
Basically you pay for size, quality and features, so you really do get what you pay for (though there should be some post xmas bargains around)
ALL HDTVs have some form of input lag, so if your a gamer you need to kep that in account
I wouldnt recommend the LG as its more a tv for those people that are willing to calibrate. Without proper calibration, LGs are generally poor compared with similar prices tvs.:idea:0 -

Thanks for your help. Have you seen that Trusthardware have now put the price up to £1400 from £585!!!
I think I will give DigitalHDMI a miss.
I am sure the big boys will bring the price down again. It's just a case of holding on.0 -
