Ecconomical "sporty" cars

Just wondering if there is such a thing as an ecconomical "sporty(ish)" car?
i would love something a bit more sporty looking (doesn't actually need to be massively fast) for my next car... but I would like something that is cheap to run.
Does such a car exist?
I know they make the Audi TT in diesel variant now that does 53mpg combined but I think that is only within the last year or three so too expensive for my budget....
I thought the Mazda RX8 might be decent having a small engine but apparently not.... and the MX5 (which I probably wouldn't have anyway as too girly) has a not too bad but not great 35 - 40 mpg.
So any options appreciated.

35 - 40 mpg is great for a 'sporty' car. There's nothing remotely sporty about a diesel, even if they are fast they aren't sporty - imagine a 747 vs a Spitfire - the 747 is faster but sporty it ain’t...
I might suggest a Smart Roadster but it isn't fast and the gearbox is annoying.
Look for something with a revvy 4 cylinder engine for maximum efficiency to fun ratio.0 -

If you rule out the MX5 for that reason, you're making a big mistake.0 -
I have an MX5, I drive it carefully and rarely get 35mpg - more like 30-32.
Bought is to buy. Brought is to bring.0 -
My dad is impressed with the mpg from his current 1.8 newish shape mx-5, although he hasn't measured it.
The Skoda VRS diesels look superb on paper, and do look pretty sporty.0 -
The post-2009 MX5s are supposed to be more economical with fuel than earlier ones, significantly better on fuel than previous shapes.0

why not grab a FIAT Barchetta?
sound mechanicals. albeit LHD, but....good enough on Top Gear? No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......0 -
FWD. I suppose that depends on your definition of "sporty".0

My son manages 36.5 mpg in his MX5 average. Try https://www.fuelly.com to look at different car mpgs in the "real world"0
