Sky HD box stuck in standby

:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

I have unplugged it several times for 3 mins and when I plug it back in, the screen says 'Sky+ HD please wait' for about 30 seconds and the message disappears. I then try to switch back on and it doesn't.

I don't want to do a system reset if possible as it will wipe my recordings - many of them won't be repeated as only shown at Christmas!

Please help me!

Nothing to offer except I would leave it off for longer, like 1 hour.

I would double check that your TV is on the right channel to display the Sky programmes as you appear to be getting some signal from the box to get that message.

If it's a Thomson HD box (from 2006 to about 2009) they often fail due to powersupply faults..... some people buy a 'satcure' repair kit and solder new components in or get a local fitter to do it. Other option is to phone Sky (assuming you subscribe) and either ask for a call out which costs £65 if not under 1 year guarantee. Some people just phohe Sky, threaten to leave as their box has failed and often Sky offer a replacement box for free depending, I suspect there's some luck (and bullplop) required for that though.

So first check if it's a Thomson (should say 'Made by xxxxxxxx' on the box) then if it is maybe consider getting it repaired.

edit, so it won't let me post the address, ok well substitute the !!!!!!! with the name I gave above in the first line.

Note, if you are receiving an error message then your TV is correctly set to the SKy HD box signal (AV input channel)

However if it's working, albeit incorrectly, the PSU is presumably also working.

remove the card after it's unplugged, then insert after it's restarted.

I have the same issue with my HD+ box sometimes.

Unplug your Sky box. Hold down the back up button on top of the box while you plug it back in. Keep your finger on the back up button until all 4 lights on front of your Sky box come on, and then you can take your finger off the back up button. Then you'll get a system update message on your TV screen. It'll take about 10 minutes and you won't lose any of your recordings. I have to regularly do this to mine.

yes with most electronics that's true but no with the Thomson HD and Thomson Sky+ boxes are notoriously unreliable and the failing powersupplies often cause wierd and wonderful problems.

A look throught the Satcure info reveals many many people suffering with many various faults ranging from only 1 dish input working, stuck in standby, pixellating images, crashes/blue screens,

of course if the OP's box isn't Thomson then it probably is something else and knowing how SkyHD boxes can be quirky any thing seems possible!

I repair many of these. Your Sky box is a Thompson...... Power supply repair (PSU) is what you need these are available from £20.00 for a good one and are simple to change.

Unpluging for a while dicharges the Capacitors and you may get the box to work again for a short while.

you will get various faults such as stuck in standby, recording faults, signal faults, playback issues, switching off, slow remote responce.

You will no doubt get the same problems again with a replacement as that also will not have had the upgrade.

There are many company that offer these repairs and fault finding guides so shop around.

    Hope this helps

Sounds like mine - and it's a Thomson.

Ring Sky, tell them you are leaving, they will ask why, tell them the box is knackard, they will send out an engineer for free to replace it (instead of the £65 they usually charge)

I replaced my power supply unit. I got the part from eBay for £30. The seller had an excellent information video. The Sky box has been working perfectly since - no failed recordings, no missing channels, no stuck on standby, no pixelating, no box freezing. And all my previous recording were safe.

I've never done anything like this but found it pretty easy. It took me a wee bit longer than 5 minutes (half an hour :o ) - but I am a novice! http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/THOMSON-REPLACEMENT-POWER-SUPPLY-faulty-Sky-HD-Box-/250760879439?pt=UK_ConEle_SatCableFreeview_RL&hash=item3a62835d4f
