Barclays have lost/stolen my money - where do I stand?

I have a business account with Barclays, a week ago I deposited some cash (over the counter, using a slip from my deposit book). It showed the money as having gone in but then it got 'reversed' the same day.

I went into the local branch this morning and the person at the counter said to me he couldn't see any reason why it was reversed, but that he would log a complaint for me and the money would be credited into the account today (as of right now it's still not showing in there, although a cheque deposit I made this morning is showing as having gone in there).

Has this happened to anyone on here before? If the money does not show up in the account by end of business today, I will obviously go back into the branch tomorrow and kick off but is there anything else I can do?

The deposit/reversal shows up on the online banking and I got a mini statement from an ATM to show the transactions also, plus I obviously have the counterfoil for the original deposit (although I forgot to take the whole deposit book with me so it didn't get stamped).

Thanks.

The deposit was made one week ago, deposited and reversed the same day with no explanation then or now from Barclays. Do you not call this LOST or STOLEN then?

Some of you trolls on this forum need to "get a grip" in my opinion.

Lack of a stamped receipt does not help ... but the reversed cash in transaction will need a good reason for explanation.

If they say it was a mistake and you are trying it on I guess CCTV could prove you visited branch

Yes I guess it's my fault for not getting it stamped, but assuming they keep their CCTV footage I can tell them exactly what time and counter I went to and even point out the guy that served me (although I don't know what his name is) - although I assume that the transactions that have showed up on my online banking/mini statement are proof enough that I was indeed at the branch that day and deposited the money?

The person I saw today took a photocopy of my counterfoil so I assume that they can (hopefully) match it all up.

    Thanks for the reply payless.
  • Ok lets try to be constructive here. I would imagine (and indeed hope!) that reversing a transaction like that cannot be done by a cashier. There may have been a cash shortage and they thought they'd discovered an error which led to it. The manager, or at least someone higher than the cashier, would've had to be involved to reverse it so I imagine they would credit it as a result of your query/complaint.

I can see why other posters thought this had happened today, but this is not the case. Therefore I would ask for helpful suggestions for the OP, think how you would feel if this were your account and money?

when I worked in a bank a cashier could reverse a transaction - although would show up on transaction list- only a stupid " thieving" cashier would input and reverse - even when not issuing a receipt... unfortunately I did see a number of cases when transactions were not processed at all ( or held back a few days)

  • When i was a cashier, i too could do reversals. This sounds like a cash balancing mistake more than anything to me, and it will be rectified. Accusing them of stealing or "kicking off" will be counter productive, although i do appreciate your frustration. Chances are the staff are sympathetic but can't just credit cash without investigating first so there's an audit trail.

This type of problem I think is periodically all too common at some branches and depends on the effectiveness of the counter staff and the experience, ability, and control and monitoring skill of the counter manager and manager. With the probable uncertainties of staffing over the holiday period, if the amount is significant to the OP, then the OP probably needs to visit the bank morning and afternoon to ride the problem to see it sorted quickly. I've heard of one or two of these going on for months because no-one properly grasps the nettle unless it has their name all over it. Get the complaint reference number and the Customer Relations (not Customer Service) telephone number and call them sooner rather than later if it just isn't happening. Never mind the "Wait 5 days for the complaint to be acknowledged". Get stuck in immediately if it is significant.

The logging of the complaint is mandatory but of itself will not in any way achieve the credit in your account today unless it contains an admission of the promise. That can only be achieved by the individual diligence of the local staff who made the promise if they have the power. Hopefully they won't be so short-staffed that they forget.
