Adobe reader

I currently have Aobe reader 8 installed on my PC, but noticed that there is also an adobe reader x. When I tried to download it, Firefox seems to think that this malicious software as it gave me a warning against downloading it. Does anyone know if there is a difference between these 2 versions.

There is an Adobe Reader X available for download from Adobe: http://get.adobe.com/uk/reader/
I'm not sure where you tried to download Adobe X from but I'd only use the URL listed above to download the latest version (if you really want Adobe Reader)

Personally, I prefer not to use Adobe Reader (bloatware and security reasons) but use Foxit instead: http://cdn01.foxitsoftware.com/pub/foxit/reader/desktop/win/4.x/4.3/enu/FoxitReader43_enu_Setup.exe

My sentiments exactly - but I'm still puzzled why ff gave me a warning although I could override it by clicking on an allow button.

  • probably due to adobe DLM (the download manager it uses) as acrobat has become a little fat over the years

That's normal for FF to do this, it's FF way of preventing potentially malicious software from automatically installing on your computer.

Yes - that's the same site I tried to download it from. I presume it's a safe site, but when I got a warning from ff, I became somewhat concerned and cancelled out.

PDF-XChange viewer is now better and has more functions, and it doesn't try to get you to install toolbars.

I'm not sure of the exact term, but it *can* allow nasties onto your PC.

If it shows up in HijackThis logs, it's always recommended for removal.
