Contract holder moving out, can I change supplier?

Hi,
My house mate who has organised all bills for the last two years he's been here is moving out in February. He has just changed the Gas/Electricity provider and we're currently paying 36ish pounds for BT broadband and phone.

As he is moving house can I use this to get out of current contracts and find cheaper ones? Or are the contracts limited to the house and so I have to wait for them to end?

Thanks for any help you can provide,
MS in training!

They're not your contracts to change-if they're solely in his name it's up to him to migrate them to his new home (broadband and phone) if he wishes or cancel and pay an ETC.
You will need to take over the gas/electricity on a deemed contract from the date of his departure as though you were a new occupier, once registered for that you can go to whichever supplier you wish.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
