Help!!!!!!!
I'm onto my 2nd Playstation 3 and had the same problem with both. This one has also just stopped recognising disks. I've challenged Sony on this but are probably on thin ground as I've had this refurbed one they used to replace the original one 20 months now.
So I'll be !!!!!!ed if I'm going to give Sony £131 for a repair so whats the likely problem to be laser maybe? Is it a difficult job? Can you get lasers seperately. Sony recon not.
I've tried all the usual resets and updating firmware but no joy.
Thanks.

Thanks very much for that. Believe me I'm pulling my hair out with this one especially seeing as everyone bought me PS3 games for Christmas and I don't have the heart to tell them the console is bust.If anyone finds the plot can they point me in its general direction.0

Not so thin ground, you are one of many thousands, get back to Sony and see what they say. How many months is it since your last [ 2nd ] refurb issue, is it less than 12 months ?
I don't do PS stuff, ask for Hammyman in these groups, he does do them.Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. No unfortunately the 2nd one has lasted 19/20 months. I have emailed Sony but I've been told not to expect much joy (Seperate thread). They must know about this issue, I mentioned it on the phone to them to be told its very rare and theres no issue but thats not what i'm seeing on net searches. I just can't believe two in a row, the 2nd one supplied direct from Sony.If anyone finds the plot can they point me in its general direction.0

I'd take the lid off the PS3, remove the drive then remove its cover and clean the laser lense first. Simple enough to do and plenty of videos on the interwibble. On the old PS3, one screw under a rubber foot on the HDD end (has warranty sticker over it) holds the lid on - the screw is one of those stupid torx ones but you can undo it with a flatblade if you press hard enough

Undo that and slide the lid sideways then remove. Next undo 7 long screws that hold the top to the bottom of the case and prise apart. The drive is held in place by nothing OTTOMH and there's a ribbon cable and power cable to undo. The metal cover on the drive is only held in place with a couple of screws.
Drives and consoles aren't linked like the Xbox 360 so you can get one from another machine and swap it in.0 -
Thanks Hammyman thats a great help, very much appreciated I'll give it a go.
Still annoyed that Sony have this 'What issue?" attitude to this common fault and don't ever want to know.If anyone finds the plot can they point me in its general direction.0 -
If you're like me and aren't constantly on the console with it having several days from time to time going unused a layer of grease can build up on the lense. If you're in a house with smokers then you get nicotine buildup as well - the stuff gets everywhere. Giving it a wipe with a dry cotton bud sorts it but you've got to get to it. No point using a cleaning CD as it needs to be able to read it to run it and I find the cotton bud trick works the best. Cleaning with a cotton bud is the first thing I try on any optical drive which isn't reading media. 9/10 times thats all it needs.
LAst thing I sorted out was a DVD player Recorder/HDD thing my bro got from his school which they were junking because it didn't read discs. He mentioned it last time I visited and it had been sat in his shed for months. 10 minutes taking it apart, 30 seconds with a cotton bud cleaning the lense and it was working fine.0 -
Now that a thought because I'm exactly the same and I smoke like a chimney. I'll definately give that a try
You know the funny thing is I never in all the years had any problem with my old PS2, must bethe joys of higher technology. If anyone finds the plot can they point me in its general direction.0 -
Hammyman if it was'nt past Christmas you sir would be on my Christmas card list. I took your advice and found a handy video. Took the top off and cleaning the lens in the laser unit with 15 minutes, popped in a disk and Bingo!. Recognised and happily played the disk straight away. I'm so relieved, you're a star.
On Youtube I found a nice handy little idiot proof guide.
Thanks so much.If anyone finds the plot can they point me in its general direction.0
