Hammyman if it was'nt past Christmas you sir would be on my Christmas card list. I took your advice and found a handy video. Took the top off and cleaning the lens in the laser unit with 15 minutes, popped in a disk and Bingo!. Recognised and happily played the disk straight away. I'm so relieved, you're a star.
On Youtube I found a nice handy little idiot proof guide.

LOL, no problem. You wouldn't believe how many car stereos, Hifis, CD players, DVD players, DVD recorders, Combo TVs, games consoles etc are in landfill due to not reading discs which could have been fixed with a bit of time and a 0.1p cotton bud.0
