The latest one I've spotted is Go Cat dry cat food - now with a flash across the top of the box that says "10% LESS CARDBOARD", but interestingly they don't draw any attention to the 5% less cat food inside the box (was 1kg now 950g).

And on the subject of pet food, don't forget it's all VATable too (don't think it's been mentioned so far on this thread) so another thing to stock up on.
Wont help with your cat food but working dog food is VAT free. Guess what my 3 mutleys will be eating :D

    Not food, but still relevant.

I've just been talking to my neighbour, who is not happy at all!

He went to the Spar this morning to buy tobacco. He says it has gone up from £2.75 yesterday to £3.07 today.

The young lad behind the counter said it's the VAT increase, so blame the government.

I reckon the vat increase should be around 5-6p, not 32p.

So they've added 26p for themselves, and are blaming the government for it.

Are you sure that this is VAT? I thought that the VAT increase wasn't happening until Tues 4th. Could it be an increase in duty? Duty on petrol went up today and the extra VAT on it will be added on Tues.

I'm not sure of anything, just repeating what I was told.

The tobacco went up from £2.75 to £3.07 and the VAT increase was given as the reason why.

I haven't heard anything about the duty on tobacco going up today. If it was I'm sure it would have been mentioned on the news.

Guys firstly what planet are you folk on...the following quotes need not be vatable if you make them yourself (and believe me your 10 yr old could do it) or get cheaper eco friendly versions

VAT on toilet rolls, not ladies sanitary supplies :)

Make your own...I have a book (e-book) somewhere I wrote on this subject...it's not difficult...just takes a bit of ingenuity and a bit of organization. Only used disposables once in the past year....comfier, cheaper etc (only I keep losing my cloth ones)..better quality (I use cotton)

Yes and that 20% is after the government have already taken their initial share of our hard earned money in PAYE and National insurance. At this rate they will be getting more of our wages than we are!

Still so long as we are tackiling the deficit we should be happy! (tongue frimly in cheek!!!!)

I'm off tomorrow to stock up on toothpaste, toothbrushes and deodorant - forgot about those!!!

Deodorant - again make your own...google it..it's not difficult...I had probs with hormonal pits the other weekend - paracetamol not really helping till I went on the homemade stuff - sorted :D...believe you can also do it with toothpaste...though haven't tried.

25 wash boxes of Daz on offer at Mr M for £3.50, bought two boxes tonight and will be going back for more, £5.26 in Mr T's don't know how much they are in Asda, also stocked up on dishwasher tablets, fabric conditioner, but what do people think....... when I was in Asda today they had cleaning sprays on offer for £1 so will the supermarkets still do the deals such as this anyway????????

Okay....ever heard of soap nuts? Not whiter than white but about 200g lasts me a year and you can make them into shampoo and cleaner when they're done. Cost no more than £5 for 200g...maybe less....again google... Or else I have a work from home business you can buy them from (PM me for the details...also has stuff for the deodorant)

So why buy into all this marketing VAT nonsense...? And why worry? Nowt you can do about it unless you go more homemade :)

Yes, I tried them a couple of years ago because people on the green board were raving about them.

In my experience they are no different to just using water to wash your clothes. A complete waste of money.
  • VAT on toilet rolls :)

Ah, that explains why there had been a run on it :rotfl:in our local Morrisons. I assumed it was just MSErs economising on crimbo decorations.

Strangely I was looking at this the other day and debating it for my doggies.......does it have a much higher fat content though?

Slightly off the topic of dog food; having had a look at the link provided earlier in the thread to HM Revenue and Customs...I had to laugh when I saw 'chocolate body paint' is zero vat rated (section 3.6)

WHY WORRY AND START PANIC BUYING? IF YOU SPEND £117.50p ON VATABLE GOODS NORMALLY THEN ITS ONLY GOING TO INCREASE TO £120.00 FROM TUESDAY, NOT THE END OF THE WORLD REALLY IS IT?
MOST OF US PROBABLY WILL ONLY SPEND A FRACTION OF THIS AMOUNT EACH WEEK ANYWAY.
    Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.
