What food to buy ahead of the VAT increase

I wonder how many supermarkets will take the opportunity to increase the price of some VATable items a little more. Also, some non-VATable items could sneakily be increased as well, keep an eye out!0

Even those items that don't have VAT on driectly will be going up in price as they are delivered to the stores by lorries, which use fuel, which is going to go up with the VAT increase therefore increasing costs which you can bet the retailers won't be absorbing! Therefore even VAT free items will be impacted by a VAT increase!!!!!! So the next time someone tewlls you chilrens clothes and sanitary products re VAT free it still has an impact on their cost!!!
I've stocked up on washing liquid, which was handily on offer 1/2 price! Also conditioner, toiletries, toilet rolls, kitchen rolls and tinned food so far! Oh and pasta!
Won't need to buy those for the whole year hopefully!:DMBNA [STRIKE]£2,029[/STRIKE] £1,145 Virgin [STRIKE]£8,712[/STRIKE] £7,957 Sainsbury [STRIKE]£6,870[/STRIKE] £5,575 M&S [STRIKE]£10,016[/STRIKE] £9,690 Barclaycard [STRIKE]£11,951[/STRIKE] £11,628 CTC [STRIKE]£7,629[/STRIKE] £6,789 Mortgage £[STRIKE]182,828[/STRIKE] £171,670

Julie, you may have a great point there!
That aside, I think everything is spiraling at the moment. Each time I buy basic store cupboard items like oats, rice, pasta, lentils, they shoot up. This is fortnightly! I've just stocked up really, but am going to definately spend the majority of my grocery budget pre jan 4th as I could save a fair bit.0 -
Is it just me who doesnt see a 25p per £10 of non essentials worth bothering about?
I mean whats that? buying one less apple a week?
Im sure most of us couldnt even get an increase of 50p a week even if we tried.0 -
Thanks OP - I have been so absorbed about how the increase will hit my business I havent even thought about this! Think I will take a leaf out of Julie2710s book and do some stocking up!0

For some of us, one less apple a week DOES make a difference. Look at the grocery challenge, couples on £50pcm, families of 4 on £70pcm. Even one individual eating healthily on £400 per year!
Yes we do not need junk, but we do need/want bin bags, foil, washing up liquid, laundry items, toilet rolls, toothpaste etc.
Some people plan in advance, if buying a years worth of laundry items saves us the price of 2 ice creams for the children in the summer, then great!0 -
its not just that its also how items are packed,
so many things i have noticed are smaller or are less in the packet
started actually weighting and counting stuff out at mo
it works out an average of £12, 50 per £500 you spend, this isnt just food this is everything not to mention fuel going up 2p as well
to me that little increase is a lot overall
then you got to take into account imports the global weather damaged wheat and rice crops this year putting flour and rice up quite a lot as well as coffee0 -

Yes, it's just you.
It's not just non essentials that will go up, everything will go up because the VAT on fuel will go up too. You need fuel to transport raw materials to factories, finished goods to wholesalers/warehouses, then to supermarkets/shops. All the companies involved in the chain will put up their prices too.
Also, a couple of weeks ago there was a survey on the morning news that said over 60% of major companies had openly admitted to planning to "hide" their own price increases in with the rise in VAT.
It won't just be vat rated items that go up, everything will, and not just by the vat rise!0 -

Yes, it is just you for all the reasons stated above.
I used to think like you until I realised exactly what the implications are with this with regards to fuel, packaging, transport in general, repairs, etc etc The list goes on.
If you add up all the 'hidden' increases over a year, coupled with the further increases that we are seeing on a weekly basis already, that would probably pay for a cheap holiday abroad for some families.
And we are talking 20% VAT now.... 20%!!!!! A fifth of our hard earned money on VAT.
I would rather have my house overflowing with supplies than see even more of my hard earned cash go to our mismanaged government.
The mess this country is in is NOT my fault! And yet, on a very small income, I have to bail it out. Those who put us in this position will be far less affected than me by these rising costs.
Rant over... Sorry0 -

Yes and that 20% is after the government have already taken their initial share of our hard earned money in PAYE and National insurance. At this rate they will be getting more of our wages than we are!
Still so long as we are tackiling the deficit we should be happy! (tongue frimly in cheek!!!!)
I'm off tomorrow to stock up on toothpaste, toothbrushes and deodorant - forgot about those!!!MBNA [STRIKE]£2,029[/STRIKE] £1,145 Virgin [STRIKE]£8,712[/STRIKE] £7,957 Sainsbury [STRIKE]£6,870[/STRIKE] £5,575 M&S [STRIKE]£10,016[/STRIKE] £9,690 Barclaycard [STRIKE]£11,951[/STRIKE] £11,628 CTC [STRIKE]£7,629[/STRIKE] £6,789 Mortgage £[STRIKE]182,828[/STRIKE] £171,670
