well with many online insurance companies your problem is not big. all you need is some comparison service which not only get you the best but the cheapest loan

    Who mentioned a " loan " ?
  • After spending hours on review sites, I'm coming to the conclusion that there are only all-bad and not-always-bad insurers. Has anyone actually had a positive experience with a claim? I need to renew my home and contents insurance this week.

    Hiscox are very good.
The reason I didn't mention them in the OPs case is that they are designed for high value households and therefore will be quite uncompetitive for £40K (you'd have to purchase about £75K).

However they are very good value (not cheapest) for exceptional cover. Their agents have cheque books and can settle small claims on the spot.
So I don't agree that there aren't any good comapnies.
Did you read reviews for Hiscox?

A small claim to their agent was up to £10000 last time I spoke to them...
  • No, I didn't see reviews of Hiscox, just the usual suspects: esure, Churchill etc. I've just got a quote from them and you're right, they are expensive! But still less than NatWest is wanting for my renewal.

Friends had a small fire in their house at the end of August. After watching what they're still going through I really want to know that, if something like that happens to me, I won't have to fight every step of the way.

Well - the phrase is you pays your money and you takes your choice.

I have no connection but I believe if you do your research you will find that Hiscox are truly exceptional.

You now have a clear choice, to buy a quality policy that is more expensive or get one of the cheaper ones where you may have more hassle on a claim.
I decided to pay more given what is at stake.
It's not just your home, but you garden, bicycles, legal liability and your possessions outside of the home as well.

If you are comparing with other policies then make sure you are comparing like with like e.g. Hiscox will incude legal cover, accidental damage, garden cover, bicycles, accidental damage etc.
