I bought a new winter jacket for my son in November from a local branch of next and the zip has stuck and I can't fix it, he had to take it off over his head. I tried to return it today but as I haven't kept the receipt they were only willing to give me what they say is the last selling price, half of what I paid. I was willing to accept an exchange but they say none of the three branches in my town have the same jacket in the same size. Where do I stand and what can I legally ask for?

Wrong - the OP has no proof of purchase, and as such is only entitled to a refund at the current selling price.

OP, do you have any other proof of purchase?

I think they're being fair. As you can't prove when it was purchased and for how much then the current selling price is all they can do. For all they know you could have bought it yesterday at the lower price and you can't prove otherwise. You're actually lucky as some retailers wont entertain any kind of refund without proof of purchase, faulty or otherwise.

Paid cash so no proof of purchase. I guess everyone else holds on to all receipts for years? I don't think they're being fair, I haven't just changed my mind - the goods were faulty.
  • Don't Next put a mark on the label when they reduce the price? I know they used to put a red dot but don't know if they still do it.

We're not talking about a couple of years though are we? I do think it is sensible to keep receipts for a few months, or longer for bigger purchases.

  • They used to do the dots, but I was looking at the stuff I've bought this year earlier and they don't have a dot, nor do the stuff I bought last year in the sale, so I'm assuming they've either stopped or our store doesn't do it.
