The Share Centre might be worth looking at. Very clear, easy-to-use website for share dealing. Advice also available. Charges given on the website.
They also deal with funds, but I don't use them for these. However hard up you are, never accept loans from your friends. Just gifts0 -
TD waterhouse expensive £12.50 a trade and poor service. I have been with them for a number of years but have just closed my accounts due to the high charges and poor service and had to pay £100 to close my trading ISA. I phoned them to close my accounts and it took 15 minutes to get through to their customer services although they were helpful when I eventually got a reply. Their website has on a number of occasions gone down and I have also had to phone them on a couple of occasions due to stock purchases not being shown in my stock list.
Could not recommend this broker give them a miss0 -
For ISAs and nominee accounts I recommend X-O.co.uk. Plain and simple and only £5.99 per trade. For SIPPs I recommend Sippdeal at £9.95 per trade. In my experience both provide a very good efficient service.0

Not all brokers are like this. Others will make me call them up and then pay a high telephone dealing fee to place some trades I can do online or on android app with TD. So TD are certainly not the cheapest but they are a good fit for me, and the dealing fees reduce to £1.50 if you are buying monthly into FTSE350 or ETFs, while annual ISA fees and inactivity fees are waived if you have a balance over £x or use the cheap regular dealing feature.
As with all customer service operations you sometimes get good or bad service but I've never had to hold 15mins while waiting for someone to pick up, and as you say, they're helpful when you speak to them. Website being down for maintenance doesn't happen very often, never been an issue.
Just thought I'd add my two cents for another side of the story. Like Neilsedaka I have a SIPPdeal sipp and they've been fine - though they do annoy me by having quite inaccurate bid prices on the portfolio view (outside trading hours) with a lot of my holdings.
Ah looking at the dates this info is probably not too useful to the original poster on this thread two years ago :cool:0 -
My experience with TD Waterhouse over the last couple of years has been absolutely dreadful. ....... An absolute disgrace in EVERY respect.
Sorry to hear your woes, I use TD Direct Investing ( used to be TD Waterhouse), not the very cheapest, but my experience has been all good.
The best bit is their really excellent Android app which means I can trade fast on the move.

I have, on several occasions unfortunately. Maybe it's a time of day thing.. "we're currently experiencing high call volumes..."
I've only been with them a month so maybe the long delays and tech gremlins are a recent development or I just don't have VIP status and the bat phone number.
They've also closed a trading account at my request but with a balance of £100 I test transferred and can no longer access to transfer elsewhere. The icing on the cake was finding out today they've double debited my current account for a regular saving amount.
Muddled pricing and charges aside, TD aren't looking too impressive for me as things stand.'We don't need to be smarter than the rest; we need to be more disciplined than the rest.' - WB0 -
Another thumbs up for iii from me, they are very cost effective for frequent traders that hold shares and funds. The helpdesk has always been excellent whenever I've needed to query something.0

Whats your budget for total share commission.
Would you be ok to buy 12 times this year at ten pounds each or 120 ?
Or is your budget more modest0 -
I presently trade with TD Waterhouse having been transferred from Hoodless Brennan when Td took over their accounts but I have to say TD Waterhouse costs are high £12.50 per trade £12.50 quarter inactivity fee unless you have over £7500 in the account and a scandalous £50 account closure fee. I would also say that their services have been poor at times with their website going down several times in the past which I found very frustrating. I am looking to close my TD account and move to either X-O or svs.
Hoodless Brennan was an excellent trading account far better than TD its a pity they finished but I do hear that they have started up again as HB trading
My advise to anyone would be give Td Waterhouse a miss look at HB trading svs or X-O
I re-opened my HB Markets (former Hoodless Brennan) account last year. The same old simple service and simple website. If I call outside trading hours the voice mail just says 'Please record your message after the beep...' without even mentioning a company name (did I mistakenly call a chinese takeaway??).
However there is no harm done. £8 flat trading charge with no admin, annual or inactivity fee, and no ISA exit fee may be even better than X-O. (X-O charges £5.95 per trade but £50 ISA exit fee).
HB can do US stocks (until 16:30 only by phone but the same £8) and the forign exchange margin is surprisingly good (hardly any spreads!) compared to Selftrade who charged me a horrendous 1.25% magin on foreign shares! Worth a try.
