I think its a shame your dog is poorly but my 13 year old dalmation has a bad back and hindquarters - its unfortunate, nothing to do with diet though - she's never been overweight and always well exercised - she has also always had more than her fair share of tit bits, given or stolen; she's a typical dal ie we live on a busy road full of take-aways she's been known to snaffle up a full kebab before you can stop her as well as once devouring 4 large meat and potato pies my wife left on the cooker to cool - But she's never had a dietary illness except once after eating a load of dark chocolate - that is taboo and a genuine no no for any dog - it can kill.
Her illness is progressive and soon she will be gone. I think a nice bit of turkey or real meat is good for a dog in addition to proper dog fare it adds to their quality of life if controlled.
People will be saying me having a pint or 4 every night is a bad thing next!

Paulsad, I lost my dalmatian at the tender age of 4 just a few months ago due to an illness and in the end the vet wanted to put him on a special diet which was only a precautionary matter and was not going to better his life in anyway. We decided that as he only had a few months left that he would stay on his normal feed as he enjoyed it and it didn't do him any harm (according to the vets). He enjoyed his main food and plenty of meat, fish and veg but always had plenty of exercise right up to his last few days.
Basically a dog needs enough exercise and a good, controlled diet. Simple really!

Having done just a little research it would seem that having an unspeyed female dog is much more a risk factor than poor diet. Some days you're the dog..... most days you're the tree!

What Kaela says is true. Also, OP, diabetes is quite a complicated matter, in dogs as well as in humans there is not a direct link to what you feed them - please do not feel it is your fault that your dog is diabetic and that you have caused it.0

Its not just titbits and overfeeding that can cause dogs to become ill.
Many of the complete foods for dogs (and cats) have ingredients in which cause cancer, these are found in the EC permitted additives, many many dog foods have them, and they're allowed to use them! thats the worst thing
I'm very very particular with what my dogs are fed, they have no artificial colours flavours or preservatives, and no cereals.
Most people just feed the cheapest or most readily available, such as Wagg, Bakers etc, with no thought for what this god awful food is actually doing to their dog internally, but thats because they dont know. Vets dont give a toss, especially if its made by Purina, as Purina cover a lot of their nutrition seminars at Uni/Vet collage, plus if the dog becomes ill, brilliant for them ££££££££££££££
We had a Purina rep come to do a talk at college once, I ripped the !!!!ers to sheds
If you want to keep your dog healthy, actually read the ingredients list once in a while

Actually, when we had a dog he never got fed any kind of prepared dog food. He had meat or fish and vegetables (lightly cooked without salt) the same as us, and just plain Winalot (the bonemeal one) mixed in it. My cats don't get dried food as such, but I do use the winalot (broken up a bit) as a dry mixer with their meat because it helps keep their teeth in good nick:D
Too much food/too little exercise is the problem where a dog (or person) is overweight, and the "type" of food is really of very little relevance.
Have a cat with thyroid trouble at the moment, reading up it seems that this is increasingly a problem nowadays and that there are some links apparent to the use of soya (which is totally not a natural dietary item for our pets) in the vast majority of pet foods these days.
Mine have all been loving the Turkey:D MUCH better for them than anything in a tin or packet."there are some persons in this World who, unable to give better proof of being wise, take a strange delight in showing what they think they have sagaciously read in mankind by uncharitable suspicions of them"(Herman Melville)0 -

No its not. Try Dogsey - now that is a truly brutal forum! If you don't give up your day job to care exclusively for your dogs, walk them for 2-4 hours a day (off lead), feed them the finest raw diet in the world and take them to the best training school ever (oh and actually like Cesar Milan) then you are less than human and should not be allowed within 5 miles of a dog.0
