Wrong type of plug - can I get a refund?

I got a rechargeable toothbrush from my dad for christmas. Nowhere on the box did it say you could only plug it in to one of those shaving plug sockets, and the charger was hidden behind card in the box so it was impossible to tell that it didn't have a normal 3 pin plug. It was in one of those impossible to open plastic boxes so it has clearly been opened.

Would I be able to return it to Boots (it is an own-brand product) as I am unable to use the product which I had no way of knowing until it had been opened?

As far as i know its pretty standard that these come with 2 pin plugs, you sure it doesnt say soemthing like "comes fitted with a 2 pin plug"

you can buy a 2 pin plug to a uk 3 pin socket which cost a few quid eg something like this
  • It definitely doesn't mention the type of plug that's fitted, and it's my first one so I had no idea it was standard. I will get one of those adapters, I forgot they existed to be honest. Thanks for reminding me.

You can certainly take it back and ask them for a refund however as it is not faulty they are under no obligation to refund or replace the toothbrush.

I assume the intention was to plug it into a socket in another part of the house and take the toothbrush out to the bathroom when required?
  • That was the intention luckylucky. I do think they should be obliged to refund if they haven't mentioned that the plug isn't standard 3 pin though. I'm just as happy getting the adapter but I think there should be a requirement to mention it on the packaging at very least.

I think it is because it is for use in a bathroom.

You can't have a 3 pin socket in a bathroom so you will have to leave it to charge in a different room.

It is designed for a shaver socket.

I don't think you'll find an electric toothbrush with a standard plug on it.

We charge our toothbrush in the kitchen. As it's a flat, it's only ten steps to the bathroom. Our last place, we had a socket in the hall that it used to share with the hoover...
We may not have it all together, but together we have it all

Yes, it's designed for use in the bathroom and therefore has the correct plug for use in the bathroom # it's not the wrong plug, rather you don't have the right socket in your bathroom. The easiest way is to get an adaptor and charge it elsewhere - they tend to last a week between charges and it's better to recharge them when they've run out rather than constantly. More annoying is when something which should have a 2-pin is supplied with a 3-pin - My wife bought a shaver to replace one which previously had a 2-pin connected to a transformer contained on a base unit - the replacement had the transformer built into the "plug" therefore was too cumbersome to use with an adaptor - they were the same brand too.

I forgot too add, I'm sure Boots will refund, but you wont find one with a different plug.
  • The adaptors are only around 95p. It always annoyed me when I couldn't find it when I needed it.

But I have 2 bathrooms with shaver plugs now. :D

The plug is standard for an electric toothbrush, if it was a 3 pin plug it would be non-standard and worthy of a mention.

The Boots website does mention 2 pin plugs on their own-brand toothbrushes.

So they are not obliged to change it (sorry)
