Tomtom vent!

Just shelled out nearly £200 for a Tomtom sat nav. (Stated price simply to show it isn't a basic no frills model, nor is it an old reduced model.)

Model was selected because of various criteria, one of which was the ability to download voices (as well as the more serious aspects I wanted it to fulfill).

Just got it out the box and it does none of what the manual tells you it should. When it's joined to the pc for example, it's supposed to ask if I want it to make a connection, it doesn't. In fact my pc doesn't even see it. (A browse through other forums suggests it has a problem with Windows 7 in particular, which is what I have.)

It took several resets before it would even install it's own software prog (which is now apparently 'My TomTom' and not 'Home').

Once connected, I find this particular model is not currently supported for many things...

The following navigation devices connect to MyTomTom:
GO LIVE 1000, GO 1000, GO LIVE 1005, GO 1005, Via Series and Via LIVE Series
We are currently introducing MyTomTom for the latest generation of TomTom devices. MyTomTom helps you manage the contents and services of your navigation device.

Why on earth introduce new models when you aren't yet able to enable people to make full use of the functions on them?! It could be a week or a year before these facilities become able to be used by this model, there's no indication of expected wait time.

It's like me offering to sell people a mixed variety bag of scones only for them to find out they can actually only get the plain ones now and they'll have to wait an indefinite unspecified length of time to get the cheese or fruit ones!

    That's unusually rubbish for TomTom.

I asked why the red light came on after an hour in the car connected to the USB car charger, they replied that it does not charge but keeps it running, so no point connecting it

What is your TomTom model? I have 2 devices - Classic and One and run Windows 7 and have no problems at all.

I would definitely ring customer services - they are very good - replaced mine when it broke after a year no problems at all - 0845 161 0009 and see if they can help.

In the mean time you can do a manual back up.

Go here and have a read or ask some questions. It seems TT have launched a somewhat restricted item onto the market but fixes will be along shortly. As a TT user I know not to buy the new models but get one of the older ones going cheap.

It's a Via Live model. Can't do a manual back up as the Tom tom is not seen as connected by the pc (this is where the Win 7 problem comes in). I see others have had the same problem, they've managed to get around it by switching to an xp pc but all our machines are win 7 now so that's not an option. Thanks for the links all, wish I'd known of the site in molerat's link before I'd bought the thing. It would have altered my choice without doubt.

  • Take it back. It's clearly not fit for purpose, especially if advertised features don't work.

It's irrelevant if they are to be supported at some future point. You've paid for it now and expect it to work now.

How do you know that the tom tom is faulty? It could be that the parameters you have your windows 7 set as will not allow it to be recognised.

If you go through 'my computer' and click on the USB drive you are using it may search and find it. If you leave your computer on standby all the time, also, it may close down the USB port. My computer will not play DVD's unless it has only recently been shut down then switched on.

I have had 3 tom toms in the past and all have worked perfectly. I have a £1500 kenwood sytem in the car now and it is crap compared to the tom tom

I'd be very peeved if I was the OP myself.

Ok so it's a new model, but to release it with a severe lack of supported functions is quite disgraceful. You could exect maybe 75% support and the further 25% in the next month, but it seems like 90% of the support is missing.

Hope you get the result you want OP.

Have you read the thread? The OP quotes the display once it is connected "Some features are not yet available but will be in the near future."

The item is therefore not fit for the purpose it was sold as.
