Very well spec'd laptop. CPU is from the new Intel processor family, entry level, however still very capable. 4GB RAM is more than plenty and 500 GB should last you some time!

What do you intend to use it for?

I'd consider the following laptop and save yourself £150

    http://www.comet.co.uk/p/Laptops/buy-LENOVO-G550-Laptop/697702

    Lenovo
    Intel Pentium Dual Core T4500
    3 GB RAM
    320 GB HDD
    Windows 7 Home Premium

Excellent make and more than capable for browsing the Internet, watching movies etc.
  • Thanks David. Just for general surfing, downloading photos and watching films. I've never heard of Lenovo, is that one of the best brands?

    Paraphrased from Wiki:

Lenovo is a Chinese based firm, first on the scence back in 1988. Lenovo bought IBM in 2005 for approximately $1.75 billion.

In 2009, Lenovo was the fourth largest vendor of personal computers in the world.

The company is the largest seller of PCs in China, with a 28.6% share of the China market.

I'd agree with all of the following posts (found doing a quick search of this forum):

    Not particularly.

Apple and Lenovo make the best laptops.

If I wanted something cheaper, I would probably be looking at Dell.

You could have a look at Lenovo. They're a chinese company who bought IBM's Laptop division a few years ago. IBM always had a reputation for building very good quality laptops witht he Thinkpad range. Lenovo seem to have continued that, I'm not sure what the rest of the range are like though but they may be worth a look.

    Lenovo are pretty decent generally.

And I second BillScarab with Lenovo - not always pretty, but very reliable

It's a fantastic laptop for the money, I wouldn't hesitate to buy it myself if I needed one in addition to my current laptop.

I'm also interested in this, as I'm after a laptop under £500. I've had my eye on a few:-
(Sorry I can't add the link properly, as I'm a new user)

    Ebuyer - product 240874
    John Lewis - product 231098320
    Novatech.co.uk - i3 Laptop £379.98
    Ebay - item number 280583813852
    Saveonlaptops.co.uk - Toshiba Satellite Pro L670-14P
    Comet - ACER ASPIRE 5742-I3
    Sainsburys - item code 121046734

I'd be using it for mostly word processing and internet based work, so a graphics card etc will not affect me. I'd be installing Linux Ubuntu/Mint, so Windows not necessarily important either. May dual boot if I get a laptop with Windows 7. I'm just looking for the best laptop for my needs but if I can get a better one for a little extra, I don't mind paying that.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Dare I suggest if you're capable of dual booting a PC you're capable of comparing RAM, CPU and HDD space?

I've never dual booted before, this would be my first time. I would only dual boot as to not waste Windows 7, as I'm not sure on being able to sell the product key. I'm a computer novice, I know nothing about CPUs and only a little about RAM. :D

With a make of 'Extra Value' I'm already put off and rule this out.

You're paying a premium for the brand. Same amount of RAM, worse CPU. Not that I suspect you'd need it but the 'Free 2 year guarantee' isn't to be sniffed at.

    How much RAM?

Cracking price. Slightly worse CPU, same RAM, smaller HDD

Hugely better than anything mentioned so far but then again it's in a completely different price range... £500

Make isn't up there with Dell, Lenovo, Apple etc. however it does have 4GB RAM, a better CPU and it's not much more at an additional £80. Smaller HDD however additional HDDs are cheap nowadays.

    Medion? Not for me.
  • Thanks, David. Looks like it's is the Lenovo or the one from Novatech, which has 3GB of RAM. Would you say the one from Novatech is worth the extra £80?

The CPU is certainly better, what the build quality is like I've no idea. I'd search these forums for a more informed opinion on this...

one thing I know about novatech is that if you wish to buy without any windows installed they give you the option with reduced price.

Since I do not use windows generally, I have bought a couple of PCs from novatech. They have a retail outlet in Reading which is near me, so items can be viewed (and tested out).
