I purchased a Sony Vaio on 19th November, £450 I initially wanted a Toshiba Satellite. However, the sales rep at PCWorld pushed me towards the Sony due to the VAT back scheme.

Sent off my details and just had a letter back stating that the laptop was not included in the scheme.

    RIP OFF SONY

Sony didn't rip you off, the salesman did.

Sony had a list of products and models very prominently displayed on their web site. They also made it clear that the offer only applied to selected, participating retailers.

It is not Sony's fault that the salesman gave you incorrect information, nor that you didn't check for yourself what the terms and conditions were.

Why not go back and have it out with the salesman?

Sony imo dangled the carrot with their tv advertisement, implying that if you bought a Sony product before 24/12 you would get your VAT back. I visited 3 shops (Tesco, Comet & PCWorld) to price compare and went for the best deal, all 3 shops said about Sony and their VAT back scheme, they nor Sony made it clearly apparent that it only applied to certain products.

IMO I expect better from a company such as Sony, and will be writing to tell them so as well.
