Sony Vaio Laptop Query +VAT back

Hi,

I have been looking for a while for a new laptop and came across the Sony vaio VPCEE3Z0E/BQ yesterday for £699 plus being able to claim £104 cash back via the VAT back offer from Sony.

When I tried to add it to basket it came up as £749.99 so I called them up and ordered over the phone for £699.99 - I received an email confirmation of my order at 7.30pm last night and it included a cashback claim form.

However when I checked my Sony account today it shows that the order was received at 2.25am on 25/12/10, if this is printed on the invoice which comes with my laptop it will mean that the cashback claim is not valid. My credit card company have confirmed that the funds were requested and authorised on 24/12/10.

My question is whether or not Sony will honour the VAT back deal?

I would also like to hear from anyone who has this laptop or similar and whether they like the laptop or not.

Thanks
Sarah

Maybe they used the Japanese date - something like 9 hrs ahead? Almost certainly just a ballsup from a big company with complex systems, try getting hold of a real customer support person in a couple of days, explain, and they'll probably sort it - after all they want you to buy a Sony lappy as opposed to ACER, etc, which you may do otherwise.

My question is whether or not Sony will honour the VAT back deal?

This question was widely discussed on another forum.

The situation was that a number of customers purchased Sony TVs before the deadline on the 24th. However, Amazon dated the orders as the 25th, which would mean not being able to claim back the VAT.

Here is a link to the discussion and I think you will find that if you follow the advice you should be able to claim your VAT back. Good luck.

  • Thanks for the info, I ordered directly with sony over the phone so will be kicking up a fuss if they refuse the VAT back! I will be calling them up on the main order line today when they open.

Just a note for any businesses that have bought a device through this scheme - this is not actually VAT back, but a manufacturers discount equivalent to the VAT amount - you can still process a regular VAT calculation on the balance to recover the tax on the discounted price if you are VAT registered :-)

You could cancel it, and either buy a much cheaper one (£300) or if you have one already, fix the reason you want to replace

  • Was it a non-geographical number, or did it take a while to process. If so you should have a record of the call on your phone bill as proof. Also, just how likely is it that they would actually take an order at that time on Christmas Day morning? That might appeal to their common sense!

  • I contacted my local sony centre where the order was assigned to and they have confirmed that my order was infact accepted and processed on the 24th December and the invoice will be dated as such. I do qualify for the £104 VAT back so am very happy with my purchase :)
  • I also have a problem with the sony VAT back deal. Purchased a hi fi ipod docking station, model no CMT-MX550i, from Argos. Argos told me the model no was in the promotion, checked sonys website, and yep there it was, thought great and sent off all the relevant docs. Reply back today to be told that I had not purchased from range of participating Sony products applicable to this promotion. A bit puzzled went back on website, yep my model was still there. Scrolled down to terms and conditions and the model CMT-MX550 without i is there. Phoned Sony and was told to resubmit and cross of the i!! Tried to find out if any difference between the 2 models but can only find details of the one with the i. Anyone else had this problem, or are Sony just trying to get out of it?
  • After reading all the issues about the sony VAT back I decided to cancel the order with sony and have gone for a different Vaio laptop with faster processor which was on sale elsewhere for less.
