LOL i was gutted for most of the morning and even cried until my son gave me a cuddle and told me that he has no problem eating Turkey & Ham Sandwiches every day or pigs in blankets but he draws the line at cauliflowers/brocolli/carrots/parsnips etc so perhaps we should buy a dog to eat those bits!

Now i am online looking for great recipes to do with all the excess food so i can freeze it. (Son and his friend are making space for me by trying to eat 4 tubs of ice cream lol) as well as taking everything out of the packaging. So at least i will learn a few new things.

So sorry to hear of your thoughtless relatives Tulip09 I hope that they are most apologetic! and Paulies Girl you were concerned about the new oven weren't you? If it's any consolation I ruined the turkey too. I'm trying to cope with a temporary kitchen until we can get a new one fitted and the oven is horrendous. I tremble everytime I put anything into it! I used a turkey roll thing in a roastabag which I've never used before. Followed the instructions and when I took it out it just crumbled as I tried to cut it. Placed it in a casserole and poured gravy over it, leaving it to soak then heated it in the microwave just before serving... it was ok, not great but ok. Luckily there's only 2 of us and not too fussy:)
The beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you.

Tulip, if it helps I have a recipe for parsnip quiche, I got loads of parnsips free and could only really find that recipe! Its not bad, the parsnip flavour mellows a little after a day or two and I preferred them like that, they all got eaten anyway, plus quiche freezes

Wow i dont know where to start lol. Give up on extended family!! I was supposed to do Christmas dinner for 14 people and boxing day buffet lunch and obviously breakfast as they were all staying over. Lots and lots of housework done, beds & bedding borrowed, food ordered & prepared or half prepared in advance. It took me a long time of putting money away and buying bargains. I expected people to start arriving about 10am but just after i get a phone call wishing me merry Christmas etc i asked what time they were coming and they told me that they presumed it was cancelled as my pipes burst last week! They didnt think to mention it 2 days ago when i mentioned i would see them today:mad:. I then phoned my other family members to check that they were on their way and the first family had phoned them all and told them i had cancelled it due to pipes bursting. So it was Christmas dinner for 2 in my house with so much food left over i cant get it in my freezer. Buffet food for tomorrow is piled high so i guess we will pig out for the next few days, cook & freeze what we can.

The silver cloud in all this though has got to be the amount of alcohol/sweets/crisps/nuts/chocolate that is unopened in my store cupboard :T that i dont now have to share but should last me a good few months anyway.

that's a real pain in the batty!!
but think of all the goodies for you and OH :D plus, you're well stocked for any unexpected guests, lunch box nibbles and if you ever need to put on a spread.

Do most of the Christmas shopping earlier-in October or even before then-so that if we get heavy snow in November next year I won;t be struggling to get to the shops.

Aww gosh babe, I bet you were heartboken. All that trouble and spoiled due to a mix up. I would have had a breakdown.

Is there any way you can invite them all for New Year or are you still prickly and chucking spears a bit?

Probably cook the turkey all the way through!!!! Despite the fact that when I tested it the juices ran perfectly clear, when I was carving it looked a bit pink. Have now turned the leftovers into 2 curries, 1 risotto and boiled up the carcass for soup.

Hopefully well cooked it will be OK. Happy Christmas to everyone xxx

Having had several similar situations with carbonised pigs in blankets and black roastiies having to put the turkey back in, I bought a meat thermometer... amazing device for a few quid. Lets me know beef is not overdone too as I like it very rare.
  • Had a lovely day. Meal was less stressful to cook than last year even though I found the prep over the last few days a bit stressful (thats my perfectionist streak though as well). Next year want to crack another couple of home made items. I'm think pastry and roasties. That will only leave me cheating on my gravy and the yorkshire puds!
