These companies want to earn more each year, not lose.

Exactly. So if they had a monopoly on DVD sales because they couldn't be copied, they'd _increase_ prices.

Why would they reduce the price if they didn't have to worry about competition from 'pirates'? What company chooses to reduce profits when it could increase them instead?
More and more copies are bought each year, so the need to increase prices and save costs (such as hiring cheap labour, moving production to countires with poor human rights).

Why would companies not want to reduce costs anyway?

You seem to have an odd idea of how business works, particularly a business like movie distribution with a government-mandated monopoly.
  • If you get a pirate copy of Microsoft Windows you can report them to microsoft and they will give you a geniune copy. You need to provide the sellers details with a receipt, but it's a cheap way to get yourself a cheap geniune copy of Windows, especially since you can get a copy for £10 and end up saving yourself £80+

Dear Microsoft, going2die_rich sold me this dodgy copy of Windows please send me a free genuine copy, fankou :)

You need proof of purchase you plank! :)

But it is a good way to catch these people. The movie industry should off the same sort of incentive since paying for one copy to someone who reports it probably stops the sale of 10's if not 100's of pirate dvds since the people that sell them usually sell more than just once and do it regularly.

Pirated media funds terrorism as well as organised crime.
    Terrorism, maybe.

    Organised crime?

You often hear that such and such a crime "funds organised crime".

    Personally, I think that's hokum.

If organised crime needs money to fund it, what on earth is the point of doing it?

You usually find that any crime about which someone has a bee in their bonnet will have the "... and fuels organised crime" tagged onto the end of the list of evils because they think it make the case for dealing with their particular "Bête Noire" just that bit stronger.

Someone copying a few DVD's in their bedroom is not funding organised crime.

Perfoming large scale countrfeiting IS organised crime!

    Ah. Well.

George Bush is high on my list of dangerous, stupid people, but I have to say Osama is higher.
    Why?

George Bush has caused the death, mutilation and injury of far more innocent people as a result of his illegal activities than Bib Laden ever did.

And Bin Laden didn't get a lying scumbag of a British Prime Minister to assist him in his murderous activities thus making the rest of us in this country targets.

Agreed. I was just looking for some advice, however I regret starting this thread now.

A very political thread this one.

At the end of the day pirated items are theft.
I know a man who knows a man who knows a man who has signed up to the dvd rental sites, gets dvd's and copies them. He then goes and sells them on to very grateful students.

Yes it is theft at the end of the day, however if legal copies were not so damn expensive then the problem would not be as bad.

How can these large corporations justify charging upto £20 for a new dvd or £15 for a cd and then get there knickers in a twist when people stop paying the price and look elsewhere.

Anyway in a few years I believe we will just be downloading everything from games to cd's to movies straight from our tv/computer and physical media items will no longer be available. This will end a lot of pirating. Not all obviousley but the corporations will find a way to stop most of it soon enough.

    What harm has it done?

No one has been rude to anyone and the debate has stayed well tempered.

If more people were prepared to discuss politics, people like tBliar and bush would not be able to lie their way into unjustifiable wars that kill hundreds of thousands of innocent people.
