    Ah. Well.

George Bush is high on my list of dangerous, stupid people, but I have to say Osama is higher.

Pirated media funds terrorism as well as organised crime.

That is SUCH a scare tactic!! Where is the actual evidence that this is true?? Surely in the VAST majority of cases pirated media actually funds people wanting to make a few extra quid on ebay??

Last summer I bought 10 dvds on ebay. Eight were boxed originals and one was a promo copy (not exactly what I wanted, but not a pirate). Only one was a pirate, but the quality of the film was excellent because it was a digital copy of the original. The seller had nearly 100% fb, so I left him a postive as well.

I know I should care a lot more about piracy, but I dont.
Forget the chicken and the egg, what do you use to plant seedless grapes?
  • actually there is a bit of a myth here.

Quite a few years ago, it was claimed that fake videos were funding drugs traficking etc, now in 2000's it has changed to terrorism.

Now of course in there can always be a tiny truth to this, but these claims were and still are devised by the copyright agencies, such as THEFT and FACT. It is to scare us and make us feel guilty about buying copies.

Drugs and Terroism fund themselves, most copies of VHS and DVD's and even games are sold by normal people (and by normal I mean those with jobs and families) not men with long beards in afganisthan and iraq.

I am actually against pirating software, movies, music etc. Do not get me wrong, but we are being lied to about this. Yes buying fakes is costing genuine buyers in higher prices, it is costing the industry millions every year, and it is making a lot of people rich, but funding terrorism and drugs, no, at least not to the extent that is claimed.

    Tip for buying safely...!

Buy from genuine retailers...! They do not make much profit on each individual item, they make it on numbers, so if you see the same thing for a huge percentage less somewhere like ebay or a market, then it is most likely a copy or stolen.

I never said anything about the extent of the problem. If fakes don't even provide 0.01% of a terrorist organisation's funding, it's still too much.

While I don't buy pirate DVDs (and one of the reasons I rarely buy any DVDs on ebay is because it's so hard to tell if they're real ones), do you seriously believe that movie distributors would charge _less_ for DVDs if they couldn't be copied?

I believe you'll find most of al Qaeda's funding has come from oil. I hope you don't buy petrol, eat food grown with oil-based fertiliser, use anything plastic, etc, etc, etc...
  • Thats true, any money going to terrorism is too much, but eradicating fake media will not stop terrorism.

Drugs fund terrorism more than anything, Marijuana and Opiates are the problem, if we could stop the world drugs and arms trade, that would pretty much finish terrorism that we know of today.

Anyway this is off topic now LOL!

Read this book by Mark Thomas, it's very good http://www.markthomasinfo.com/

I don't have a choice about where I buy oil or plastic from.

I do have a choice not to buy fakes.

Well yes... These companies want to earn more each year, not lose. More and more copies are bought each year, so the need to increase prices and save costs (such as hiring cheap labour, moving production to countires with poor human rights).

If fakes were taken out of circulation and eridacted, we would see a drop in prices, not much, as the increase is actually quite small per unit that we pay.
  • If you get a pirate copy of Microsoft Windows you can report them to microsoft and they will give you a geniune copy. You need to provide the sellers details with a receipt, but it's a cheap way to get yourself a cheap geniune copy of Windows, especially since you can get a copy for £10 and end up saving yourself £80+ :D
