No Sound on Laptop

I am not to clued up on computers so please understand if i dont make myself clear
My son came to me and said his laptop had no sound,so I tried to find the problem.
I found there was a yellow mark against the media audio controller in the device manager and no device showing in the sound and audio properties. So I read through some threads about this problem, went to the toshiba site and downloaded the Soundmax digital audio driver and installed it.
Went back to the device manager no yellow marks, went to sound and audio properties and it showed the default device as Soundmax digital audio,so I thought I had sorted the problem but alas, I have no sound from the speakers but have sound out of the headphones socket.
Sorry about the long post but it was the only way I could expain it.

It is a Toshiba
Satellite Pro A10
model PSA15E-01PJY-EN
os Windows XP Home
Version 2002
Service Pk 3
motherboard Intel i852GM

Thanks in advance for any help,

Tried system restore, but for some reason there is no restore point before 22nd Dec
When I right click on the speaker icon it only shows open volume control and adjust audio properties

  • In the adjust audio does it show your speakers with a green tick?

there is no box to tick in speakers only volume adjustment which is set at default which is 50%
on the volume tab it shows soundmax digital audio ahd device volume as 50%
on the sounds tab the sound scheme is blank with a drop down box that shows 1) blank,2) no sounds,3)windows default
tried windows default but no difference

go to Device manager and uninstall the item with the exclamation mark , it should then reinstall it , may need a reboot to do so

There was an exclaimation mark next to the media audio controller,so I went the toshiba site and downloaded the sound drivers for the laptop and installed them, that gave me sound through the earphones but not through the speakers,so there are no exclaimation marks in the device manager now.

excuse my ignorance I'm not to clued up on this.
I've looked in all the audio codecs and it says the device is working properly.
if you want me to delete these you will have to tell me how to as I cannot find an uninstall anywhere in device manager
