Just moved in what should I do with matress that has been left behind

Options
I moved in about two week ago and the seller left behind a number of items.

One of them was a decent standard double matress.

But friends are telling me mixed messages. Some say I should bin it due to dust and mites. Others say I should get it cleaned.

Matresses are not that expensive so I could buy one. But I might decide to let my place in 4-6 months time.

And tenants may then face the same dilema.

So what I spend on the matress now could only be for 4-6 months and then I would have to throw it. Because I have no where to store it.

What should I do?

Using it sounds OK if it looks in reasonable condition already. After all, if you sleep in hotels you are sleeping on a mattress used by goodness knows how many people. If you met the seller and saw the house with their stuff in it then you have a feeling for how clean they were. If it bothers you put a mattress protector under the sheets.

  • You bought the house and therefore anything left behind now belongs to you. If you felt like being nice you could contact the vendors and ask them if they want to come back and collect it.

If you're gong to let the house and it looks decent, I'd keep it. Tenants renting furnished accommodation rarely want to buy new mattresses if what is supplied is adequate and if they do want to buy new ones they'll be taking them with them at the end of the tenancy, so then you'll need to acquire a replacement any way.

Thats what I was thinking. People sleep on Hotel matresses and think of how many people sleep on and do things on them.

Where can I buy a matress protector?

    Thanks

Someone once told me once the mattress is out of the wrapper the dust mites move in, so the cleanest person's going to have some, I'd clean it then use it for the new tenants.

Agree with what's been said. If it looks and smells clean then it's bound to be fine.
I'd spray it with Fabreeze (or supermarket equivalent) and look in Argos for a matress protector.

If and when you want to get rid of it, try Freegle / Freecycle.

Tesco do OK ones, Sainsburys do some papery value range ones, any large supermarket or department store will do them.

Hotel's make me laugh as some people are fussy about second hand stuff but I bet they will sleep in the hotel bed and use the towels :D

Either vac it and use it with a mattress protector or

    1. Put it on freecycle
    2. Ring council to get them to remove it (Not easy over xmas)
    3. put it outside house with "Mattress £10 enquire within" and it'll be gone within 10 mins!

If it's clean but you have no base stick it in a spare room for a guest to sleep on. A mattress is alsmost always more comfy than a sofa.

If you are thinking about renting it out, you could think about a waterproof matress protector - I bought one from M&S that feels exactly like a standard matress cover, not like cheap ones I bought for the kids that were incredibly noisy if you tried to turn over.

Well as part of the process of moving in you'll be changing all the locks and fumigating the house.

I should just fumigate the matress at the same time..
