What is different about a 3D TV to a normal TV?

I was wondering what the difference was between a 3D TV and an LCD TV please?

Sky have their 3D channels and we was wondering if they would work on our TV if we have the glasses from the cinema. Is it just the image that is different or is it the screen?

Thanks

The Cinema 3D glasses will only work in the cinema - 3D TVs use a completely different type of technology.

You can't see 3D on a normal LCD TV. You'll need a new 3D TV (very expensive) and a 3D source - either a 3D-capable Blu-ray player and 3D Blu-ray disc, or a Sky 3D subscription. Either way, it involves huge expense, and there's hardly any 3D content out there yet. Much better to wait for the technology to mature and prices to come down to a reasonable level.

Good points by Poppy, i would wait 3 or so years. If you want 3dTV effects without the cost go to the pub , I have had 3d since the days of black and white radios:D

  • Thanks ,I thought Sky would be more thorough in trying to explain it but there was not much info on there.

Your explaination has been most helpful so big thanks for that.

If it was a case of no expense then I'd sign up but not if we have to buy a specific TV, that is just daft as there is just one 3D channel on Sky and half of that you have to buy. Since posting this, hubby looke up the price of glasses and they cost £53 each. Ouch. There are 4 of us. It did cross my mind that we may be able to wear glasses from the cinema, they were advertising it there today and so I thought I would have a look.

Always best with new technology to wait a year or so, till the fuss has died down, then buy (unless moneys no object!).

Sky broadcast their 3D channel with each eye side-by-side. If you watch on a 2D TV, you'll see your screen split vertically into 2.

3DTVs can understand this, and merge the two images together to provide a 3D image when viewed with the 3D glasses

also, the different tv manufacturers are using different methods of 'displaying' 3D, so glasses dont work with other screens

realistically its a gimmick & will only have a place in a cinema, where they are always showing new content.

Another quite large % feel sick when they realise that they have wasted a fortune on a fairly useless gimmick. ;)
