freesat in Spain

As will be seen in my previous posts, I am not very technically minded so could anyone advise please on the following
We have at the moment a 2.5 metre sat dish with two feeds, one to our main tv and skydigibox with one off card (no subscription) and the other we intend to run upstairs to a tv and box.
My questions are
1/ Is a freesat box the same as a sky free to air box
2/ Could we have freesat upstairs and the sky box downstairs
3/ What channels are available on a freesat box in Spain
Thanks

(1) Almost, but not quite the same, however it will work OK.
(2) Yes.
(3) Impossible to answer, due to many factors; location, dish size, make and strength of LNB etc. but similar to a Sky receiver.0 -
With a 2.5 dish correctly installed your going to get all the channels on Astra2 right down to Gibraltar.
But this is from technical knowledge not personal experience.0 -

Obviously ..:), I can tell you a few parts of Spain where you will not get BBC2 on a 2.5 dish, and they are nowhere near as far south as Gibralter.0 -
Well thats why I put that on there
I know very well that reality some times differs from the tech specs.

Friends near Alicante have a 1.8m petalised satellite dish and get all the free to air sat channels including BBC2 using the Wales or NI channels. Locally the '4s' are not good but if you use the search for 'other channels' choice on your skybox - the NI '4s' will come up.
People use ordinary Sky boxes and buy a white free to air card from Sky (£20) approx.
If your dish has a dual LNB you can service 2 boxes & with a quad LNB you can have a Skyplus box which needs 2 LNBs and 2 ordinary boxes.
If you choose eg a Humax box you can draw in HD free to air sat like BBC HD and ITV HD etc.
The best quad LNB is Invacom Quad which you can pick up on E Bay etc.
Hope this helps.0 -

The NI Channel 4 can be received via 1.3 metre dish near Alicante, however I have my doubts about the claims of BBC2 on a 1.8m dish, I would doubt that they can get full coverage 24/7 throughout the year, unless they are well south of Alicante.0 -

The strongest channel for BBC used to be BBC Channel Islands - this has now been changed to BBC1HD and the BBC Oxford and BBC SE etc are now providing a strong BBC1 signal - the good news from that change is that we now can receive BBC2 Wales & NI - all day.
Hope this helps.
Good news, but only time will tell if it will last throughout the year, as you probably know, the available signal varies with the seasons.
BTW, I assume that you are south of Alicante, the signal improves the further south that you go.0 -
Hi and thanks for all your replies
After a lot more research we have decided to go ahead with the freesat box upstairs and the skybox downstairs.
We live north of Alicante, about 35k inland from Benidorm, 850 metres up a mountain!! and are able to revieve bbc1 and 2, 24 hours a day at the moment. all the 4s are a little dodgy but we can live with that
Thanks again0
