Hi,
I am a first time buy and today exchanged contracts with a completion date of 10th January.
I know we need to get buildings insurance from today which I am currently sorting.
Is the anything else I need to sort as this is the first time I have done this. Does electricty, gas etc. need to be sorted out prior to moving in?
Any advise would be hugely apprecciated! :j

Nothing else to sort other than at your end. Its a case of sitting and waiting for the phone call now. Gas/electric sort out when you're there and get the meter readings. One thing I would get kicked off is phone and internet access. If they're not on BT it'll take a week to get a BT line and then from there another week to get broadband activated.0

When should the building insurance start? Exchange or completion..0

Buildings insurance starts from exchange.
I've just bought a house and completed last Friday! We haven't moved in yet.0 -
Your solicitor shouldn't have let you exchange without building insurance in place (assuming you have a mortgage on the house). If not, get it sorted this afternoon.
I would ring elec+gas when you've moved in. You can arrange BT now if they don't have it, if not you may as well wait until you're in.0 -

Our financial advisor recommended getting life insurance from exchange as, apparently, if you die between exchange and completion, your estate is still obliged to see it through. Not heard it anywhere else though so he may have just been trying to scare us.0

broadband...took us two weeks in the summer..think of changing locks? It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.0 -

With regards to broadband how do you go about doing this before you move in?
I know the landline number but I understand people can take this number with them if they move to another property within the same area code.
Also when I put in the number it indicates there is a current broadband service on the line and it will require the MAC code. How will I get this, will it be supplied on exchange?
Sorry if these are silly questions, completely new to me!0 -
Phone your broadband provider and inform them you are moving house. They will arrange disconnection and reconnection on the same day if your line is active at the exchange.0
