Guys
I know that some banks do the 'pre-approved' thing with credit cards, loans and the like to flog their own products - are RBS the same does anyone know?
I've also read on here it should be easier to get a credit card from your own bank (in time, I've only just opened the account) - does anyone have experience of this and was it offered or did you have to apply?
thanks

Banks do treat customers well if they run their accounts correctly.
However, even pre-approved cards are subject to a full credit check and RBS I think use the dreaded AVU who are nitoriously harsh."We want the finest wines available to humanity, we want them here, and we want them now!"0 -

Thanks for this, although I had a Barclays basic account for years and they never offered me anything...
What is the AVU and what does it do? I am assuming Account verification or some such thing, but what does that mean if you are already a customer?
thanks

Application Verification Unit, I think once you have an account, they don't figure any longer.
But I do know that Natwest still ran a full check when I got a new credit card this year even though it was "pre approved" through online banking.
They also checked me for my personal loan and a new joint account but did not check for my overdraft.
I think NW and RBS are the same company so I bet they operate in a similar fashion."We want the finest wines available to humanity, we want them here, and we want them now!"0 -
King Elvis, where on online banking does it show you if you have been pre-approved for anything? I get messages about upgrading my account etc, but I have only been banking (main current account) with them for 4 months so maybe thats why. ThanksDebt free and staying that way! :beer:0

I was chatting on the phone to one of their advisors and he mentioned that I'd already been approved and to apply through online banking.
Sure enough, it went through instantly and it even tells you your credit limit. On the overdraft, I just applied through online again and it tells you what they will offer you before you accept it.
You must apply though online banking though.
St Clair on here is your person for NW / RBS"We want the finest wines available to humanity, we want them here, and we want them now!"0 -

I think it depends on what account you have. I have spoken to them just now and they say that if you have a Key Account it is classed as a basic non-borrowing account and therefore the only way to upgrade is to go into the branch to do it. They recommended 3 months for me (as I have just moved house and don't appear on the electoral roll yet - roll on 4th January when my council do the upload!)
However if you have a standard current account I'm not sure if pre-approved offers appear anywhere in your online banking.
As I say I used to bank with Barclays and as it was a basic account I never got offered anything

Thanks King Elvis, might give em a call. I have a current plus account and my salary and all my other payments go into the account, and I never use my overdraft, so hopefully I'll have a good chance at getting a credit card with them aswell. Think I'll wait till after Christmas now though!Debt free and staying that way! :beer:0

I bank with both, never seen a pre-app section0

I am with Halifax and got pre-approved for their Clarity credit card and definitely no credit checks:T
Been with them about 6 month's.
Many years ago I used to be with Natwest and only wanted a £100 overdraft, a few month's later they automatically put it up to £800.
I think banks do a 'soft' search on your CRA files.0 -
I have a Halifax Reward account too as a second account, and hopefully will go for the Reward Clarity card in a few months. Ive only had the account a month, so I think its a bit too soon to apply to them yet!
I just really want to get rid of my Santander Zero card now, I cant access it online (because they cant fix it), and their telephone service is rubbish!Debt free and staying that way! :beer:0
