Caution - Three mobile

Three have turned off their 2G backup - confirmed by a Three Shop in Salisbury and discussed at depth at a 3G forum!
People apparently ARE getting let out of agreements where this causes loss of service - I presume under the basis of:
Detrimental Service Reductions during a contract period.
Three have made no effort to tell anyone about this change.
Anyone got any templates, or high level contact numbers for three, interested in joining the people who have got out of their agreements FOC! (managed it with T-Mobile for similar reasons earlier in the year!)
What a pain, have to find another provider, was very happy with Three! :-(
Anyone else's experiences???

Three have *NEVER* offered you a backup 2G service, they have always offered three coverage in voice and video areas.
You'll find it hard to show they ever offered you a backup on Orange, 9and in fact the backup used to be o2.
However have you actually tried to ask this? Three are going over and beyond what they have to do and are letting people out if they have no coverage, which is more than you'll get from other providers.
If you have an issue call three and state the issue, if they agree you have no coverage(and they will know where they don't have transmotters and you'd be using the backup service) the contract will be cancelled. If you are simply trying to get the phone for free but have service they will know that and you'll have an uphill fight.
Theres no issue or no problem, no need for template letters or anything Three are just been in pretty good at customer service.0 -
I wonder when they started turning the masts off.
With my old phone (Nokia E63) I got great near perfect indoor reception and the last time I checked their coverage map i was in a good reception area.
But since I Got my new phone (Desire HD) in November I've been getting terrible reception, first I thought it was my phone, till i checked the coverage map today, now I'm in a poor reception area it's only a hundred meter zone and my house is in the middle of it!
Think I'm gonna give them a call tomorrow and see if they have turned off any masts in my area.Laters

I got a Desire HD recently and it has to be said that the quality of signal I'm getting is poor compared to my old BB 9000. In part, at least, I think you may find your phone is the source of the problem.
Still worth having a chat with Three, of course. If I've helped you please show your appreciation by using the "Thanks" button

are you sure they have turned off the 2G?
if I force my phone (on 3 mobile) to only use GSM (2G) then it connects perfectly, I'm wondering if people are getting cut off because they for the main part have only been using 2G they have decided to just cut then off as it states clearly in their T&Cs
and the reason I still get a signal on 2G is because (everywhere I go) I get a 3G 3 mobile signal.0 -
As I understand it, and as it's been explained to me, it's not a case of turning off their 2g backup.
It's a case of no longer being able to use the Orange system.
Three had a deal with Orange and were using their system where the 3 signal was poor. (on 2g obviously).
Orange and T Mobile are now together and 3 no longer have a deal to use their system.
3 used to cut you off for forcing your phone onto 2g as it used the Orange system and not the 3 system.
I know it's a bit more complicated than my explanation, I've only given the very basic information to try and explain what has happened with 3.0 -
There isn't happening nationwide, indeed Orange recently agreed to join the Three/T-Mobile joint network. All that has happened, is that in areas where Three believe that they have excellent 3G coverage, they no longer allow roaming onto Orange's 2G network.
For a small number of people this means reduced or no coverage. In which case if you call Three, they will get someone to call you back with a choice of offers. You can either cancel the contract or accept a reduction in your monthly bill.0 -

You are correct it isnt nationwide but most of the major cities and towns where H3G feel that the 3G coverage is sufficent. They are slowly turning the LACs off which allow roaming onto Orange.
Just to Correct you Orange technically hasnt joined the Three/T Mobile Joint network. H3G and T Mobile have a 3G RAN share (T Mobile and H3G share 3G Masts thats all) H3G cant use T Mobile 2G however Orange and T Mobile have a joint 2G Network and eventually Orange and T Mobile will be able to use each others 3G Networks slight difference to what you have said0
