Huuby had a portable minidisc player...stupid idiot left it in plain view in his car and someone smashed the window and nicked it.We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.

First video recorder: probably around 1995 (earlier?)
First (and only) mobile: c. 2003, when I had to go on a longish archeological trip to Turkey. Very useful for texting home from abroad. Avoid using it whenever possible, but it's useful for telling people you are going to arrive on time (or not), etc.
First DVD player: probably around 2005 (?)
First home PC: none (use a Mac). First home Mac whenever the first iBook came out – the one that looks a bit like a handbag.
Broadband Internet: shortly after getting the iBook.
Sky TV: never have and never will.0

Video: 1989 and still going, despite being heavily used by two kids from the age of about 2.5 up to uni. OK I have another modernish one I bought from a man in a car park to use for video to DVD transfers, and I've had access to/worn out about a dozen others through work. First video/camera set up I ever used was a reel to reel Shibaden in 1972 or 3. It went so fast, you had to watch that the tape didn't cut your fingers!:rotfl:
Mobile: Guessing at 2004. Still going. I find it invaluable to phone it, to find out where I last put it.
DVD Player: Umm... bought one for daughter's Christmas about 2005, but we all used it.:p It has just failed, but she has another now from a woman on a train who 'had too many.' We oldies meanwhile bought one of our own. They are about £6.50 now.
First Home PC: Apart from those horrible Acorn things borrowed from work, we bought one for business in 1998. It still does what it did for us then, as the program for a newer model is around £500. I'm on something else for t'Internet as it would be too slow for that now.
Broadband: Dunno. Probably 2004ish. I remember that you didn't need to make a cup of tea while things downloaded. Paid for itself in savings on tea.
 Sky TV: No thanks.
You forgot video cameras. I have one of those from 1989 and it is much nicer to use than my digital one. Some of these things have become way too small and fiddly.0

Video recorder - My Dad bought one in 1980, I then proceeded to watch all the horror video nasties ( I was 11 at the time :-)). Dad didn't seem to mind, but frowned a bit at f and blinding and any nudity. The lesbian scene in The Driller Killer was particularly uncomfortable, yet the guy going through the mincer in The Exterminater didn't raise an eyebrow
DVD player 1999. The Matrix with Dolby Digital was amazing as well as Carrie Ann Moss in that cat suit
Mobile Phone. Had a brick in 1997 with my job, but thought it was amazing at the time.
PC. 1998 and as Cleaver said, it cost a bomb and was !!!!!!
Broadband. 512k in 2001, 10x faster than dial up made surfing !!!!!! much more enjoyable
Sky TV. On and off since 1990.Have owned outright since Sept 2009, however I'm of the firm belief that high prices are a cancer on society, they have sucked money out of the economy, handing it to banks who've squandered it.0

I remember you could buy vids from those video shops £25 each  and then swap them for £5, I think our first one was The Warriors. Then the black market kicked in with sub-standard copies for £not a lot.'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. A single market without barriers visible or invisible giving you direct and unhindered access to the purchasing power of over 300 million of the worlds wealthiest and most prosperous people' Margaret Thatcher0

Hehe, a lot of my purchases of early technology was done when we were in an owned property or whilst we were saving for one.
Our later eletrical purchases were done when we were well off but not looking for an owned property.
Now I don't buy any of the new technology until it becomes so cheap that anyone can buy it......No BlueRay, 3D etc here but we would have had them if me and ex hubby had still been together.
But we would still not have wanted to have a mortgage...once bitten, twice shy.We made it! Oh yes.....I know we borrowed or had been given my late father in laws video camera in 1998, when youngest was born. It was certainly borrowed in 1996 for eldest's 3rd birthday.
We bought our first brand new one in around 2001 but in my divorce, hubby got the camcorder and I got the digital camera plus stereo.
What about car CD players? My first one was a Sony which I had in my Renault 14, the CD player was worth more than the car at £399 new. I know they were fairly new to the market and thus very expensive! We made it! Most of the items listen passed me by (as in I never bought them). I will say in my younger days I was reasonably up to date with games consoles and such like and had my first mobile in 2000. These days I have withdrawn from the rat race and actually think about what I, Eg I don't ahve a 'smart' phone, I don't own a PS3, I wait until dvd's are >£3.99, I wait until video games are >£12.99. In short I think I have moved away from the wanting everything now and am jut ahppy with getting stuff eventually.
I let the early adopters take up most of the cost and swoop in later an buy at a lot less (if its any use at all to me).Have my first business premises (+4th business) 01/11/2017

We moved to South Korea early 2000. Took all the furniture, including some UK televisions and video recorders. Mainly so we could watch my huge store of Fawlty Towers......
I couldn't understand the confusion amongst Koreans about the Video Recorders (when I asked about getting one to attach to my Korean cable television [NTSC system]).
It turns out they have never had Video Recorders. When they were invented, Koreans were too poor for this sort of thing. But their extremely rapid development meant that when they could afford it, then DVD's were all the rage. So they missed them out completely. Similar, I think, to phone land lines. Very prevalent in business, obviously, but I never knew a Korean with a land line at home.0
