Don't forget that you can use vinegar as a fabric conditioner too. It works well

You would be safer using Borax than Soda Crystals because soda crystals attack aluminium and some washing machines have aluminium drum bearings which could fail if you use Soda Crystals.0

I started using half washing powder and half soda crystals in my washing machine and dishwasher, but even though I kept it in an airtight container, the soda crystals made the powder go all lumpy and hard. Now I just use soda crystals now and again, but mix a small box of value washing powder with a same size box of more expensive powder - not one with built in softener though, because we use cloth nappies.
I may be a bit "duh" now, but what's Borax and where can I get it?0 -

Hi,
Wouldn't your clothes smell of vinegar after?Ladymac0 -
You can get borax from boots.0

The smell of vinegar is only slight and it dissipates during drying. If it bothers you a lot, you can put a few drops of Zoflora in with it.ladymacbeth_uk wrote:Hi,

Putting white vinegar in the rinse is brilliant for towels, they come up really fluffy. Apparently it'd what lots of hotels do as a matter of course.0

thanks for all your repllies everyone - you've made me feel very welcome

Squeaky - i have used vinegar as a softener but sometimes don't even bother with this now and have noticed no real difference - the only thing i have to use softener for is my jeans or its like wearing cardboard!!!!
(and I've never noticed a vinegar smell on clothes - but OH reckons I'm immune to the smell as i use it so often!!)0
