The fast flashing lights I saw yesterday were in fact faster then the ones in that video link. Quite a bit faster in fact. Which is why I thought... there is no way a driver could feather the brake that fast!

It seems to make sense to have a solid brake light which gets brighter as you brake harder... but to have it flashing like I saw yesterday is confusing and makes no sense at all!

EU regs may over-ride UK regs, but if an EU member state decides not to implement the regs, then the EU regs will not come into force until a period of not less than 3 years has passed.
EU regs can be overruled if a member state has it's own regs in place that already cover the same thing as the EU regs. I.E. the EU H&S regs are not applicable in the UK as we already have the 'Health and Safety at Work Act'.

VOSA may well rule that the UK 'Roads Traffic Act' overrules EU Legislation and ban such lighting systems.

You sure they weren't trying to brake and failing miserably? I've been behind drivers braking hard on snow/ice before and the ABS has caused the brake lights to go nuts, as it pulses the braking.

The ABS shouldn't affect how the lights illuminate, as the brake pedal wont pulsate so much as to cause this, as the brake pedal is directly linked to the brake light switch. If this causes such an issue, I'd say the switch is faulty!
  • I have corrected all my 6 typos of the word 'break' which now reads brake, including in the thread title :D :rotfl:

Some cars DO pulse the brake lights when ABS is active - as it's usually an indication of someone braking hard.

If it's a dilliberate thing, fair enough. I assumed tripled meant that the ABS caused it to happen in the same way as feathering the brake pedal would.
  • With the number of bikes around here with flashing rear lights I'd probably assume at first that it was a bike, then wonder why there were two of them side-by-side, with their lights in harmony!
  • I still flash Volvos in the daytime.

I still flash Volvos in the daytime.

I was a passenger in a Volvo waiting to turn right into a car park across a stop-start queue of traffic, when someone took offence at the daytime running lights on his Volvo.

All it meant is that I bore the brunt of the impact when my mate took it as a signal to go and turned right in front of the guy just as he started to move again.

Yes I know that flashing doesn't officially mean "I'm letting you through", however it also doesn't mean "Or, turn off your lights you muppet", and as there were plenty of witnesses who all said the guy stopped, flashed and then started moving after my mate began turning right, the insurance went in my mate's favour.

    (e: no I didn't claim personal injury)
