Cars with fast flashing brake lights - the weather?

EU regulations override UK ones, so this will probably explain it. Basically if a car passes EU standards to be put on the road, the DVLA MUST allow it to be registered here, even if it would contravene UK regulations. This is the case with bi xenon lights. I think that's how it works anyway...A good idea, but last time I checked the construction and use regulations, it was illegal for a car to display anything other than a steady light with the exception of direction indicators and emergency beacons.
How did these cars get approval for registration in the UK?
I believe some expensive BMWs have brake lights which go brighter when you brake heavily.0 -
I've noticed lots of new Astra's have flashing rear brake lights. But it's not a steady flash/flicker, its as though there is a fault0

ive seen some fiats that flash the hazard lights under hard braking during an emergency stop situation.
at first i ruled it out as being cheap italian junk being faulty, but after seeing a few different models doing it i assume its now a "safety feature"....work permit granted!0 -
So does this mean people are not being smooth with the pedals? The key to safe driving in these conditions...0

I think the OP is referring to LED brake lights, which when your eyes scan across them, can sometimes appear to flicker.0

I was on a dual carriageway last week late at night with a taxi van up ahead with a flickering 3rd break light. I didn't know !!!!!! it was from a distance until I got nearer!0

They seem to be coming but they should only flash if travelling over 30mph and under a certain inertia maybe the after market ones are not set right?
I tend to agree with Patman99 unless its widely publicised people are going to think !!!!!!!!0 -

Some people can see the LED brake lights flicker even without scanning across them. My GF has this problem and driving behind a new BMW or Merc, which seem to be the worst offenders, drives her spare.
They flash them to allow them to run cheaper LEDs at a higher brightness than they would be able to do if they were lit steadily.0
