Direct Line Shock!

Im 27 and been with direct line since I was 18.

My insurance got progressively cheaper every year till last year when I paid £366. This year however they are telling me they cannot offer it to me for less than £450!!!

Its 2002 3 series BMW, nothing particular fancy and not worth much more than £3500. So Im pretty furious.

I practically begged them to lower it- stating I also have a second vehicle and my home insured by them.

Anyone else faced a massive hike?

  • I was with direct line for car insurance for last 2 years, when they sent me my renewal it went from 385 up to 475. I am 23 with 6 years no claims so was not prepared to pay the increase.

In the end i went with LV and paid 360 for the year, i would shop around if i was you.

Its not fair!! I might be a man but I drive like a woman!! I should get cheaper insurance!
  • I allways shop around no matter what i am renewing and allways find i end up going with someone else as they are cheaper just to get your money.
But one thing i have found this last 2 years is Direct Line have not come near to being cheap anymore.

Shop around is allways the best advice. I have used LV, Churchhill and Admiral to name but a few in the past.

LOL, if you are a good driver it MAY pay you to take an advanced test as you get a discount, but I'd check the quotes first.

Do you know what- Im going to go against everything I believe in and pretend to be a sheep for the day.

Im going to phone up and accept their offer of £436 (last year was £366).

I spend all year trying to get bargains, haggling and pestering call centres!! I think Im just going to accept it because the home insurance and the mrs car we have with them is very reasonably priced!!

But if you have two insurances with them already in the household insuring your car elsewhere won't matter.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

That's why they have increased it - because you'll pay it.
Your other car and home insurance will go up by more than 20% next time you get your renewal.
Shop round, and move every time.
(If it's now down to £436, why did they say they couldn't offer insurance for less than £450?)
  • I just renewed mine today with admiral £385.00, my renewal from churchill had gone up by £100 to £450 from last year. I am 52 with over 9years NC. When I checked with the comparison sites they were all about the same up £70-£100 on last year.

To be honest I don't know why people stay with their same insurance companies year after year without looking for cheaper themselves. Even if DL was the cheapest i can gaurentee you i would get it at least £42 cheaper than the quote.

    Here is an example.

AA policy renewal: this is only for breakdown cover. The quote was for myself, Relay and roadside. The price was the same as RAC however for that price with RAC i could get 2 pepole on the cover and if i went through Quidco I could also get another £42 cashback by going with RAC. So i told AA that not only did they match RAC and put my son on the cover they also reduced my cover by £42, so my cover went down from £11 per month to £7. you have to shop around and be cheeky otherwise companies just sell you down the river.
All the big powers they've silenced me. So much for free speech and choice on this fundamental human right, and outing the liars.
