  • Well we've decided to keep the money that goes in our bank to cover direct debits and the excess we will withdraw. We will pay our rent 137 weekly and car insurance £25 weekly as well as set aside 25 weekly for mobile bill. After that it's money for food and petrol and it's about £180. This will be ok if my OH keeps on top of it as he's good and it's me that screws up :(
I am feeling really positive bout 2011.
Should get bout £750 in jan, need to pay £125 to bank, and pay car mot and service is going to be about £400 :( and the surplus we will keep in bank to give us a slight headstart to our new budget.

When I used to be bad I had two purses... one with cards in, one without!!! I used to go places I knew I didn't need to withdraw money with only cash. So when you get to the till at the food shop and it was over budget... the cards couldn't come out.

Be sensible though... make sure your driving licence and breakdown cover cards are always on you.

Oh and get rid of the cards you don't need!
We spend money we don't have, on things that we don't need, to impress people we don't like. I don't and I'm happy!

  • I also have many friends who trained with me at university to become teachers who can't get a job for love nor money, many who are even going as far as relocating if they can find a job.

There are no guarantees and in a saturated job market with so many more graduates being churned out things may get worse.

I am suprised you seem to think that re-locating to find work as a graduate is going quite far!?

In the current saturated and competitive market if you are not willing to be flexible then you probably don't deserve the job that you think you will get on graduation!

I have to admit I was lucky graduating in the last golden year before the crash but I did have to relocate 200 miles to the south to get what was a reasonable starting salary.
    Thinking critically since 1996....
  • I didn't say that re-locating to find work is 'going quite far'. I said that they were 'going as far' as relocating.

As for having to relocate, for me, yes it would be going really far. I would not be able to move away from my family for personal reasons that I am not willing to go into on here...so does that mean I don't deserve a job?

  • For some people relocating is a big deal for some people it makes no difference. I suppose it depends on your personal circumstances.
  • I relocated for my job... but as with an earlier poster I have to be within 40 miles of a certain place, so it limits my chances.

Having said that I drive a hour each way to work now, the petrol costs eat a good chunk of my low wages....!

I will next time not be willing to drive so far I think. As a woman, who is responsible for a child, working so far from home means I am not there in an emergency and I am fed up of asking my childminder to handle it for me!

As costaerer states, it depends on the personal circumstances.

  • You really really need to shop around for car insurance. At 18 I wasn't even paying that much on a 1.6 pluriel. The mobile phone bill also needs to be drastically reduced as others have said. The grocery bill is also massive!

£1,300 is not excessive for a 22 year old male student. "Male" and "student" being high risk factors, also they may well live in a riskier area.
